Whats Sky NZ's view of folks who buy boxes off ebay or your NZ equivalent Trade me - and phone sky to try to pair this new box to the viewing card? Is this frowned on?

in the UK - Sky are happy with this as its from monthly subs that sky make their money....its quite common for people to buy a high spec box off the internet and pair it with their viewing card...

Sky here have no view on this because it simply can't happen. Sky NZ own all the STB's.

Not really true to say: "... it simply can't happen". As you and I both know Steve, it is possible to use a valid Sky card in a 3rd party decoder. Sky do indeed own all the STBs they install, but there is nothing really to stop people removing the Smart Card and using it in a decoder of their own. No doubt it violates the T&Cs, but Sky are still getting paid, so I don't see them losing too much sleep over it.

It sounds like - although Sky NZ dont like folks pairing higher spec boxes with their viewing cards - are hardly going to send around the Sky TV police to lock you up. If this is a route i go down - ill get a sky ownded box and once thats up and running - put their box in the cupboard and install my UK 1TB box....i just need confirmation this is technically feasable...

What settings do i need to post here to confirm with you knowldgeable types that my UK box will work??

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much

Unless it is one of the linux pvrs like vu+duo I think you will be disappointed and will find it doesn't work. The firmware implementation will be different. Just so people know the cards are "tied" to the myskyhdi boxes in that although you can use the card to view in any box you can't play back recordings unless you use the card tied the box. I have several hdi boxes and have confirmed this by swapping cards around.

tkr001 if I understand you correctly then it would be frustrating if you use different cards on one MySky STB for recording shows and then have to figure out which card needs to be used for playing back the recording. So it would seem the card number is used to decrypt/unlock/check the recording on the hard drive?

Indeed. I only really stumbled on it when I had a box replaced and the installer used the card from the old box but forgot to call HO and advise them of the new box details so they could do whatever they do. Watched and recorded fine but couldn't play back recordings unril they fixed it.

Well it seems my plan of getting a cheap 1TB box into NZ seems to have crashed and burned....damn you all at Sky NZ!!!!!

Guess ill have to dig deep and get myself a 1Tb box when im there....

Have they launched sky 3d yet??

They said the MySky+ and MySky HDi boxes are 3D-ready, but no 3D content yet. RWC finals are supposed to be in 3D.

Correct. I have a friend who is an installer and he tells me his tech card will allow viewing on HDi boxes, but not things like time shifting, recording or playback as it is not paired to any box id.

I am yet to have a play with it on my HTPC to see what I can make work tho...
