IME thats not entirely true. When I got MySky HDi installed, the installer hijacked my single HDMI port for it, removing my PS3 connection. I purchased a cheap HDMI switch from TradeMe, and the seller kindly threw in a free HDMI cable. I initially used the original HDMI cable (another cheapie purchased from TradeMe), but I found that every minute or so, the picture would flicker, and a visible line would be rendered across the TV for a fraction of a second. I replaced the HDMI cable with the one I got with the switch, and the problem hasn't occurred since.

You just confirmed that it is true, you cable was on the verge of not working, so you replaced it with one that does.

You stated it either works or it doesn't. I replied with an experience with a cable that worked perfectly fine when going directly from my PS3 to my TV, but mostly worked when going through an HDMI switch. It still worked, but I had an occasional degradation in signal quality. I swapped this cable for another HDMI cable, and this one worked without exhibiting the same symptom.

I'm no cabling expert, but my thought at the time was that this may have been caused by interference, and the replacement cable had better insulation than the one I was originally using. Both cables were the same length (2 meters, IIRC).

Its not that its lower quality, the cable is likely just damaged (excessive twisting etc)
I've seen plenty of 'top quality' hdmi cables suffer the same issues.

If undamaged, an expensive vs a cheap hdmi cable will perform the same.

The cable performed without issue if it wasn't run through the switch, but that certainly sounds like an acceptably logical explanation. At least, no less logical than my interference theory. :-)
