I'm waiting to see if add free during the programs. If add free definitely interested, if same adds as box, vibe, or free to air then no way will i pay for it.

with my Sky package i have

* a MySky receiver (free for 6 months, but i am DEFINITELY going to keep it!)
* Sky Movies package
+ the Rialto Channel
* SkyWatch magazine

when this new channel comes i am VERY tempted to drop "Rialto" channel, as i actually WORK in a video store..... which means i can hire any film i want, but i am going to be sad to see "Later with Jools Holland" disppear ;(

Why that isn't on UKTV is beyond me! lol. they need to screen "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" :P

Looks like its in HD: "All available content will be screened in HD, with the exception of some classic library content which is only available in standard definition".

Edit: Looks like its pretty much commercial free as well: "SoHo scheduled content is uncut and commercial free. Programming runs in a six hour block and each programme will air two days a week."

Uncut and commercial free is probably enough to get me on the hook - if the pricing is sane and the content line-up is decent.

Some of the channels on Sky (The Box, Comedy Central) don't so much have occasional advertising breaks as saturation bombing (with the same 4-5 ads over, and over, and over, and over again!) They are significantly worse than free to air channels for relentless interuptive ads, and are essentially unwatchable without ad-skip. Tried to watch Spartacus, and quickly gave up, it seemed that after the first 10 minutes there was a 3-4 minute ad-break every 5 minutes, and just about more ad than program in total.

Perhaps after the tournament-that-shall-not-be-named-so-as-to-avoid-risk-of-prosecution there will be sufficient bandwidth (or what-have-you) to enable Discovery and Nat Geo to go HD. After all, they'll need to do something try holding onto onto those customers that have really just signed up for the t-t-s-n-b-n-s-a-t-a-r-o-p. Would make the HD ticket much better value (I assume providing it to everyone in HD would undermine the value of the HD ticket, so that wouldn't happen).

so far one new channel, "SoHo" has been announced..... i have a feeling that a SciFi channel is on it's way too :P

i mean, between channels 10-20, there ARE one or two gaps that need filling up ;)

I posted this as a comment on the Stuff article, giving my opinion on the new channel:

The thing that worries me about this announcement is that the programming on the "basic package" channels will lose quality as all the good shows will be moved to this premium channel.

I can understand why Sky are doing this - the threat of everyone switching to Freeview this year and next is very very real and Sky needs to differentiate itself. But I hope they will try and compete with a "Sky Lite" option, instead of going completely "expensive and fancy".

i read somewhere that Sky were happy about this happening as it meant that their other channel, Prime, would benefit too... as they shows will eventually end up on their schedule too.

Obviously subscribers of SoHo will get them first cos they're paying for it, but once the show has come to the end of the specific season, it sounds as though Prime will inherit the episodes too... just a little later down the road :)

Or, to look at it another way, the shows that would have been on prime, TVNZ, TV3 etc anyway will now not show up until much much later because soho subscribers will get them first and regular prime viewers will not get them until three months later. E.g. True Blood.

My understanding is that TVNZ waits until many programs are more than a year old because once past that point they are a lot cheaper. Eg Coro St.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

well a promo loop for Soho has started tonight on Sky channel 10 - I don't have any Sky HD channels (or Mysky for that matter) so it's an SD promo.
