seems a bit ominous when they say they will have a 'selection of sporting events'

One thing about having Sky sports is that all the major sporting events will be on there - every super 15, every tri nations etc etc. Why on earth would anyone spend $200 on a STB, and then $20-40 per game when they might not even be showing the games you want. how absurd.

With the Igloo way it is optional you watch what you want to watch live then watch the rest as repeats. With Sky you have to have all four Sport channels and there is 90% crap on them. If your interest is Rugby you can't have just the Rugby channel without all the other sports channels.

I think Sky should dump the "package" method and have a complete 'pick and mix' options on all channels.

they will never, ever do that since it completely destroys the eocnomics of the channels.

what I was trying to say is that with Igloo, you may not even be able to watch what you want to watch if they 'choose' not to show it. even if I was willing to pay $40 for a game, I would be extremeley annoyed if they decided not to show it at all.

Your speaking to the converted here and every time this is suggested a big silence from Sky.. I would go back and get Sky if I could "Pick n Mix"

To be honest, I doubt this unit is going to be much of a success.

As a Sky-lite option, the niche it would appeal to is pretty narrow. Essentially (i) people who can't/won't pay for the Sky package, and are happy to pay a slightly lesser rate for a much cut down package of channels, and/or (ii) people who only want to watch a film or sports match very rarely and are happy to pay a (fairly steep premium to do so).

While such people exist, I doubt it's a huge market, and am not sure that the revenue will be enough to maintain a nationwide DTT infrastructure and cover the transmission costs etc. Both groups will be pretty small - as the channel package is pretty basic, and for sports or a film personally I would probably go to the video shop for a film or the pub for a sports game if I was in the market segment they are targeting. Plus, I suspect that people on tight budgets who are looking for a cheapo option don't typically have expensive high-cap broadband plans, and will find that streaming paid-for extras quickly annihilates their data allowances.

As a freeview box it seems pretty bad value. Based on what I've read, it seems to be a fairly gimped box compared to other FV boxes in the same price bracket - which offer the ability to plug in a USB drive and record etc.

So, I doubt the uptake will be terrific, and I also doubt that a high proportion of buyers will be heavy ongoing users of the paid channels and streaming.

I can see why Sky may be doing it. Even if the economics don't quite work, it means they don't have to give their frequencies up for non-use, which might enable another provider to grab them and set up in competition. It's harder to see what TVNZ think they will get out of this - from a TVNZ perspective it appears to be an even worse strategy than the failed TiVo venture.

We have Sky Basic and do not book any movies and not interested in sport at all. We have Sky for the documentaries (not much lately) and Comedy Central etc. Igloo has too little of what we are interested in, Sky Basic has too much. So we will stick with Sky Basic.

For movies we get Fatso (which is also owned by Sky). Much better value for money than Sky Movies.

I was vaguely interested in this when it was first mentioned that some sports would be available PPV. My wife is an avid cricket fan, but we can't justify the Sky subscription just for the cricket. This seemed like a good option. But I checked the Igloo website and it shows that for one match (the HRV Cup - Knights vs Volts) is $15. For one match, that's too much (especially on top of the cost of the Igloo box). Adding up the individual matches (domestic + international) over the cricket season, it's going to cost more than a full Sky subscription. I know it's pitched at people who want to watch the occasional sports event, but it doesn't really make economic sense to me...

I hadn't really heard abut Igloo till I saw an article in Stuff today.

It might be answer to my TV problems as follows.

I have TCL cable but really only watch Food TV, UKTV, BBC Knowledge and TLC (which is only available on TCL cable). The rest I watch over Freeview.

For that I have to pay $70.96 which is $51 for the service, $5 for Food TV and $15 for a second decoder.

I don't use the TCL PVR but record shows using GBPVR either via a DVB-T card for Freeview or captured from the TCL STB (for non Freeview channels) to a Hauppauge PVR250.

In reality if I could just get Food TV that would do us. So from a cost/benefit point of view Igloo might be the answer.

Would have to get two Igloo boxes ($400) and then for recording Food TV, presumably capture the composite video out to my PVR250 card. I would have to find a way for GBPVR to be able to learn and then send the IR codes for the Igloo STB remote which is the way I record TCL cable now.

So my monthly cost would $24.95 for the additional channels saving $45/month over TCL. So it would break even after about 9 months.

Apart from no longer be able to get TLC, anything else I missed out in the analysis?

In my case, since we don't have Sky and don't follow sports that much, Igloo would probably be a step back from TiVo for example...

However if Igloo had a monthly subscription package instead of charging $1.99 per TV episode then it would be a good option to Quickflix - currently both TV series offerings are dated TV series with nothing new around their catalogue making $1.99 per TV episode very expensive.
