Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
Hopefully this is just Phase 1 (or 2 if you count fanpass) and another app is in the works for all their channels
eracode: Sky have today announced major changes/additions to their sports steaming services. I wonder if they’re looking at a further streaming app for ‘general’ Sky programming following the recently-cancelled puck - i.e. are the sports streaming changes announced today the end of their IPTV aspirations?
To me, they have to be. The sports will see a good number downgrade to that, but a much larger number jump back to Sky Sports at $40 pm.
If they do this with general programming at a reduced price (MySky drops off at least) then they will see some downgrades but probably a number of returning subscribers. Its only ever been about price
larknz: The press release doesn't mention anything about streaming. I would assume that they are talking about the satellite service
Two different media releases:
Referral Links:
Quic - Use code R536299EPGOCN at checkout for free setup
Contact Energy - Use code FRTQDXB for $100 credit
SSN via streaming, 14 August
Via Satellite in the normal Sky Sports bundle, 1 August
SheriffNZ: On demand sports is the key for me with my use case (putting kids to bed during game times etc). I’m glad to see that being available.
Nailed it. Its all about recording. If you can't record, we need OD. OD is "streaming recording" All sports events need to be OD for a week. Ideally any news type content is OD for a week. Key events should be more than a week. If its not that good but close enough, that's ok

Rikkitic:The only time I now use my other alternatives at all (aerial and satellite) are when I want to see something on Prime or Choice, neither of which offer streaming services. That isn't very often with all the other options out there.

Sorry - maybe it’s just me but I find your comment difficult to understand - seems somewhat ambiguous to me. Any chance you could expand on what you’re saying because I’m genuinely interested in all this.
Probably me
The issue is price. Sky is seen as too expensive. But if they drop the price the profit plummets. They only make about $8 per subscriber per month, or it was that at least
So, if the $40 Sky Sport Now suited me, I will drop my $95 sub for a $40 sub. Ouch. But they may pickup 3 new SkySportNow subscribers. ARPU (average revenue per unit)will drop but overall revenue will increase
Similarly, if they provide a full internet app for the Basic and Starter, some will downgrade from MySky to that and lose revenue, but a lot more might get Sky back as they can do that cheaper now as SVOD Sky should be a lower cost. Again, churn some revenue but get more returning
They could have done this earlier, with unknown results, but they have really upped the ante, 12 sport channels, home grown sports news, its quite a change. They have improved the price but also added more value

The link does not work.
I thought the sky website was skytv.co.nz, not sky.co.nz., or is this an alternative they use
The link works for me. Sky are migrating from skytv to just sky. If you hit skytv.co.nz you will end up on sky.co.nz.
