Igloo with a lot more thought  could have been a very good product  .   With the lack of USB recording   and going to sleep overnight , which makes future timer recordings on a Hard Drive recorder or even an old VCR impossible .
The non standard DC power plug makes it difficult for those wanting to make up a DC cable for Campers or Caravans difficult
you have to chop up the dc out lead on the  AC adaptor .

I think TiVo could achieve what they were after and provide a PVR, they had the franchise already why not just expand on it.

My parents are remotely interested in Igloo, mum likes the channels on offer but the cost of the box is off putting. I would have thought my parents would be the ideal target market, if their not going to buy Igloo then I can't think of anyone that will...

TIVO would be a no go for Igloo   its most likely  not DVBT2 capable   and probably not capable of Irdeto decryption for the enc Igloo transmission

Tivo make a Cablecard version.. (not that we have it in NZ).... Would do (if Sky/Igloo desired, which of course they wouldn't) Irdeto without breaking a sweat.

I was in JB HiFi in Wellington yesterday and couldn't see an Igloo box. How seriously is this being marketed?

Harvey's and Sky have had a tie up for years. Noel's / Bond's represent the highest number of stores through out the country...
JB's don't have the reach. Dickies would have been a consideration I suspect, but they push their own DSE boxes quite a lot, so maybe not?

Surprised it isn't at the big red shed then, seeing they now own NL & BB, although that may just be a matter of time. It would also probably fit into igloos demographic, whatever that is.

Over Christmas I actually saw a couple of ad breaks on FTA TV (I was with others - normally I either fast forward, flip channels, or mute the sound and go for a cuppa), and note that TVNZ are running ads promoting the Igloo box. This is what they should have done for TiVO.

If I was in their shoes and had a $10m+ investment going sour because of no uptake, then I would have been pulling out all the stops and:
1. Aggressively running ads promoting (rather than the ghastly promos they usually waste air time on where newsreaders shine torches at the sky while banal music plays)
2. As well as overt ads, aggressive soft promotion in news and current affairs shows (a slot on new digital technology on Close Up or similar, heavy-handed insertion of items on revolutionary new tech arriving in NZ in the 6pm news etc).
3. Partnering with mainstream retailers, and incentivising them to push the product *hard* using co-branding in ads etc.

I'm still mystified as to why they sank so much money into their last venture then failed to use any of their marketing resources to promote it? It's almost like they wanted it to fail?

This, and the fact that major retailers like Leemings seem to have Igloo prominently displayed, makes me think they are serious this time. Just a pity that, compared to the capabilities of the TiVo, Igloo is such a steaming pile of wormy dog-doo.

Tivo hurts their customers

igloo doesnt to the same degree as its only a live pause and no skip etc, so their customers purchases are still viewed as firstly who can be stuffed finding a USB that will work, and secondly it works so badly if its like any other USB stick based live pause that its not worth the bother to skip over TVNZ's customers purchased time.

Has anyone got anything good to say about Igloo? I am thinking of getting a box in time for winter so I can ppv the occasional sports event. I won't use it for any other content and will still use Tivo as my primary set top box along with my apple tv, netflix etc. However, given the inability to forecast the sporting content and the negativity around the experience is doesnt seem like its going to be worth it? Any other point of view?

Its standard def and they are hardly trying, why put your money up on something that they clearly dont really care about?
