The fact that sky makes about $10 per month per subscription profit then I can't see how channels can be .45 cents each. If they were they would be out of business pretty quickly.

I understand people are grumpy about stuff they don't want but a ppv system will not relate to much lower costs. To generate the same level of profit they will have to have the same level of revenue and even if profit was drop by 1/2 that is still only a reduction of $5 a month.

Like any business to generate the revenue they will price the popular stuff accordingly and may go even more in various prices for various times watched model.

As an aside if you go into MacDonalds and said no gerkin I don't want it will they reduce the price?

I still think this will revolve around what is offered up for pay per view. If it follows the unique event format of the main SKY satellite service then that won't offer much for IGLOO users, (as not that much really is offered as PPV on SKY). If they offer more sports content as PPV on IGLOO then that would be cool, eg F1 races, Warriors games etc.

It would make my day if I could watch Warriors games ppv and not have to pay for all the other channels I dont' want. I just can't see why Sky would do it. If you offered NRL and Super 15 / Tri Nations PPV on Igloo they would lose most of their subscriber base to PPV (assuming it was cheaper).

Agreed, therein lies the obvious problem ~ Sky is not going to do jack to jeopardise subscribers to it's major money earner, satellite. As much as I want to be able to buy a season pass to just the NRL or F1, I just can't see it happening. I think that will come via non Sky based online options before it's transmitted. As I said above, I'm curious to see if SKY will offer IGLOO only sport PPV options, or just stick with their current PPV options such as movies or one off sporting events such as boxing matches etc.

And yeah, I'd want HD for sure. Who the duck wants to pay for PPV SD?!

They are pitching this as "Sky lite" with limited 30-day packages aimed at the budget conscious who don't want to sign up for a full Sky package. Conceptually, it doesn't seem too different to the way Telecom tries to get a new category of subscribers by having a full service/price "Telecom Mobile" brand, and a differentiated "Skinny" brand that targets a different market segment.

They have to tread a fine line between offering enough content at a low enough price to hoover up sufficient new subscribers that they can cover the extra costs of running a new terrestrial network and cover the cost of the set top boxes and still turn a profit; but not too much content at such a low price-point that they materially cannibalise their existing higher-revenue subscriber base. That's why, for instance, I doubt they will offer premium sport in HD on the igloo platform priced way below the cost of non-HD sport on the main platform.

There is a good discussion on slashdot.org about PPV and what people want / are willing to pay. Admittedly, the story is about who is pirating Game of Thrones and why. (If you don't know about slashdot.org, make sure the slider is up to a 4 or 5 rating.)

Related to that and PPV is the recently launched Take My Money, HBO! that shows what people would be willing to pay for PPV material.

Funny thing their advertising shows someone thinking hard about a 12 month contract and the voice over giving the impression it's a bad thing - the only company doing "contracts" it's Igloo's own parent company.

I find it funny that IGLOO is criticizing it's own parent company. But in the end, all of the money is being trucked into sky, so they don't mind.

I was offered a deal(free MYSKY HDi) + free sports/movies) if I sign a contract like phone companies(free phone + bonus minutes/data), I decided to pay up front and no contract. it is a choice even with SKY.

I aim to misbehave.

Hi, I do not mean to get into a tit for tat but Telstraclear also do. http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/inhome/packages/early-termination-charges.cfm at the bottom of the page they say there is a 6 month minimum subscription, another name for a contract.

I aim to misbehave.
