Maybe Telecom could have some sort of app developers competition  / incentive  for the likes of Roku, Chromecast and Apple TV units  rather than wait for months  /  never for them to be developed.  The idea of getting as many devices on board should  be right up there with content..

davidcole: Yeah i personally see chromecast and the most likely recipient of most of these services....given it's easier to get apps on there compared to native apple tv apps.  It's a similar model to the roku (ie channels/apps etc) but it's more likely to be sold here and I get the impression easier to develop for as most places already have apps that the casting ability can be built into.

I could be wrong but I don't know anyone that uses airplay exclusively for pushing all their content to a tv.

Agreed, I think Chromecast is easiest. AppleTV must be hard, because no NZ services are on there. I don't even think some of the larger overseas ones are ther (is BBC iPlayers on AppleTV?)

I think PremierLeaguePass uses AirPlay, do they have an Android App?

sdav: I know it's very early days but I'm not sure these companies get it.

I don't watch TV on my computer, phone or . I watch TV shows on TV. I like Netflix because I can hook it up to my TV and that's exactly what I do. Look at the devices that Hulu, Netflix etc support. Look at the services , etc support. Hope I'm wrong and that support for consoles, network bluray players, Apple TV, Roku etc is coming...

This.

We're operating a plug and play service for our residential customers - sign up, take home a Roku Streaming Stick, plug it in, sign up to your preferred subscription, away you go.

you've created a streaming video service????

Or do you mean you just give away rokus and have nothing to do with the apps the customer uses?

The two thingsare totally separate things.

The problem with these types of services that have been launched recently is that they are focused on overseas entertainment content, and they really don't cater to people like myself who are more interested in domestic news and current affairs.

The only credible offerings in that space are the 3News and 3Now apps which have poor resolution and severely limited ability to stream to Apple TV. That's why Freeview will be my delivery platform of choice for the forseeable future.

I'd concentrate on Apple TV and Roku, and have apps for all major Smart TV vendors as a secondary target.

I would concentrate on content. Content (and a lot of us know and already access it) is the major consideration that will either make or break it. Everything else is secondary or maybe even irrelevant if the first consideration is not given the importance it requires.

Content is important, yes. But without an easy way for non-technical people to get the content onto their TVs you also have a big problem.

It says 15 dollars per 30 days. Isn't that an odd billing interval?

Have to say I think the name is bland and generic, and the logo too, which looks like it was done in MS word.

Unless it is viewable on a TV, via an app to an existing set top box, I think I will pass. I doubt sky are worried, and their share price hasn't been affected by this announcement.

I wonder if it will be a trial where they require your credit card, and you have to opt out before the end of the trial period otherwise you will be charged for the next month. Many people forget they signed up under those schemes , so start being charged.

It however doesn't say it is an all you can eat service does it? They may charge extra for premium content.

I wasn't overly impressed..apparently I should stick to more than just 3 episodes.

I think air play is great. I've been using it since i got my first mac book pro with mountain lion.  I had some difficulties using airplay when i used my Wi-Fi connection on Huawei HG556a, it would always drop the connection not only from the mac book but other devices connected. I bought an airport extreme and plugged it to Huawei HG556a and haven't had a problem since. I use the 5GHz frequency to connect my apple products and it works absolutely fine even switching airplay between device is very smooth. It will be good to see what else can lightbox can get the rights for.

Perphaps Sony and Microsoft would do well to help get an app out for their consoles. Microsoft wnat the Xbox to be the enterntainment hub so this would make sense for them in the NZ market.

Good on Telecom taking on the Monopoly that is Sky, it can only be good for the NZ market. Lightbox could offer other content that NetFlix or Hulu don't offer, try and get the TVNZ content from the channels they flicked off to Sky maybe a go, add some live sports, bid for rights when the licenses come up for renewal.

The initial comment on 5000 hours of content, how does that compare with Netflix does anyone know ?.

I think Netflix marketing throws around the 50,000 movie & tv titles number. Not sure about actual 'hours'.
