I managed to watch the F1 via XBMC at the weekend.
Worked OKish, with a bit of buffering.

Google: vdubt25

KiwiNZ: I am considering buying out of my Sky/VF. TV contract ...

How much would that cost you?
In my case it was $399, so I waited until my 2-year contract expired before bailing out.

Time to Ditch Sky for me. After having Netflix for a weekend the kids are sold as they can now choose what they watch and are excited to see the characters.

The only downside of not having Sky is no V8 Super Cars and some Doco's but it looks like netflix are adding more content all the time so will see how it progresses.

Which model Freeview recorder did you get. And does it operate as well as the MYSKY recorder? What price / where did you buy it? etc. and does it by chance double as a media player?

I am also considering dumping SKY, but my reason isn't the cost, but because of the unending, unnecessary, self promotion adverts constantly breaking and interupting the programmes that I am actually paying to see - totally counter productive and driving me away from Sky. Sky don't seem to realise that there are alternatives!

I ended up buying a

Dish TV satBox-plus S7080

The website to check it is
http://www.dishtv.co.nz/Satellite-Receivers-satBox/146-Dish-TV-satBox-plus-S7080/flypage_web2_lite.tpl.htm

As for the cost i think i paid about 150 ish!! It was off one of the oneday sale sites.
Not a media center, but pretty much does everything mysky does, the wife hasn't complained so cant be that bad as it hasn't messed up her MKR or bachelor yet!!

I got a Panasonic DMR-BWT840. It is a dual-receiver recorder, so you can record one channel while watching another, or record two at once (and I can watch a third at the same time using the Freeview tuner built into my telly). It has a 1TB hard drive and will also stream video over the network using DLNA. Apparently that doesn't always work particularly well but what I tried of it seemed okay. Normally I use my little Minix Windows box for streaming using PLEX though. Much nicer interface. The only thing I miss on the MySky box is the ability to rewind live TV if I miss what was said. The Freeview recorder pauses but doesn't rewind. For a saving of $70 per month, I can live with that.

I too have the Panasonic DMR-BWT840 - and after taking a little while to get used to it, I use that for Freeview recording and my Apple TV for the other bits and pieces such as GOT and some of the other stuff on SOHO/discovery etc I'm all set - and yes saving 90ish bucks a month, its paid for itself pretty quickly...

The only unknown for me is if there is going to be a firmware upgrade for this Panny to support Freeview Plus...?

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much

I have the BWT720. I hate the Freeview EPG, but I will have to adapt. And be assimilated.

Where alse from Sky can I get Discovery, Natgeo, BBC Knowledge, History, and for that matter any other good doco channels?

Yes, I'm waiting eagerly to see if Freeview Plus will arrive on the BWT840. It's on the equivalent product in Australia (I think it's the 850, which seems to be identical).

History Channel can be streamed on Apple TV with Unotelly without needing a cable subscription. Netflix has some good doccos. Also with Unotelly you can access BBC and Channel 4 and their documentaries.

Also if you have vodafone as the ISP for your cable or fibre broadband you can get their recorder for free as part of your plan, that will have access to freeview channels via their fibre or cable network

It records, rewinds, pauses, series link etc

Not as polished as mysky but does the job
