Does this mean they've relaxed or removed the amazingly frustrating device limits? Having to remove a device before watching on a new device, only being able to remove devices via the web page, only being able to remove one device a month. Painful and pointless.

Happy with Netflix and my Apple Movies (enjoy the 5-10$ range and free upgrade to 4k) but this pricing for SD and HD should be stopped!

Re-watched Sicario in HD last night (as prep for watching Sicariao:Soldado his week). 

 

Bought it on mobile when out and about.  I was surprised to find movies ready to view under the profile drop down, but I'll know for next time.

 

Playback was faultless.  Audio was OK on our 3.1 set-up.

It's about time SD became 1080p because that's been pretty much the standard in my house for 5 years.  The current SD should just be done away with completely when it comes to streaming sites, especially with the excellent compression that modern codecs give you with 1080p content, there's really no useful scenario I can think of for SD anymore.

I'm sure that Lightbox would love to have HD as standard (as it did for television shows) however the price point increase would place it at a competitive disadvantage relative to those offering SD and HD price stratification.  Look what happened with TV - $13/mth for HD TV shows (probably being $10/mth for SD plus the usual 30% HD loading to reflect the greater utility for consumers) and near-zero uptake for its services.  

 

Even Netflix starts off with SD on its basic package - and when Netflix Ultra is introduced you'll start to see extra price tier for HDR over the price of its 4K plan.  Want a better picture - be prepared to pay more.  You want HD to be the standard - then prepare for your standard price to be higher.

I scanned the entire list of 403 movies, there is a large overlap with what I get already (and can't be bothered watching) on my Netflix sub.

 

The model seems to be to hope that existing customers will weaken and pay for movies when family members (young and old) nag and tantrum sufficiently long and loudly.

 

 

 

 

Yeah the catalogue for older films is pretty poorly priced considering whats available to NZ customers of Netflix and Prime Video at no extra cost.

Not all Spark customers will have Netflix. And very few have Prime Video (if the rest of the world is a good barometer for Primes share).
The idea of Lightbox Movies is to give any household access to PPV movies that they otherwise wouldn't have access too - at the generally accepted retail price. It's a pretty easy offering for Lightbox given its another distribution outlet with little/no cost to carry inventory.
To compare the back catalogue of Netflix and suggest that Netflix subscribers aren't going to buy back catalogue PPV movies from Lightbox makes you the smartest consumer around. Hopefully that will lead you to the conclusion that Lightbox Movies is not trying to compete with Netflix.

If they only offered new release titles I think their pricing is ok given the time to watch it a few times in 48 hours and the wide format of devices available. But have you looked at the $4.99-5.99 movies offered I'm referring to? Thats what I have an issue with, Harry Potter 1-8 for $40-48 when you can rent for a fraction of that. 10+ year old films which are $1-2 to rent a DVD for a week(vs 48 hours when you click play). 

 

 

 

As for options:

 

Spark Customers can get Netflix Standard(HD) at half price(6 months free on 12 month term/12 months free on 24 month term) for $7.50 a month over 12 months

 

iirc Prime Video is/was $2.99US($4.50) a month for the first six months then $5.99US($9, no contract at any point) with a free monthly twitch prime sub($4.99US value) 

 

 

 

Both are great value in addition to Lightbox's free TV catalogue.

Another option for movies is Neon.

I have six week trial from Armageddon and planning to continue there,

As well as some of SoHo TV range, they have more recent movies.

I can’t Get Light Box movie prices to show on my phone, but Fantastic Beasts, Wonder Woman, are on Neon, only takes 3 movies a month to pass $20 on Light Box, or 4 if they’re $6 ones.

I'm afraid the lack of 5.1 audio is the real kicker for me.

 

I agree different pricing of SD vs HD doesn't make a lot of sense these days of 4K and above video.

So I've noticed that every time we purchase a movie via Lightbox on the Smart TV we have to go into the mobile and log into complete the purchase - partner mumbled something about having to provide an address as well.  Then we have to log in again on the TV.
