@Paul1977 yep, we're all aware; nothing we can do unfortunately.

Basically I agree with you all.

Netflix and Amazon are relevant. None of the others are meaningful players. If Lightbox wants to postionnitself as a meaningful player in this market it needs to offer a competitive service.

We use it because it's free with our Spark account. I'd consider paying for it if it had a competitive offering. Currently I don't see it.

@GeorgefromLightbox thanks for the quick response, but it seems very odd to suggest that this can’t be changed. Surely the 5 device limit is a policy decision and not a technical restriction?

GeorgefromLightbox: The ones that don't are Netflix & Amazon, because when you're a $6b+ company (in the case of Netflix) you can make whatever deals you like.

@GeorgefromLightbox so is the device limit a contractual obligation with the rights holders that you are bound to observe?

@Paul1977 & @Handle9 - 5 devices at any one time. You can have 12 devices per year, and they roll out automatically 'FIFO' (First In, First Out) on login.

@GV27 - Unfortunately PS3 is, to quote @eracode, flaky. It's a very old bit of kit and by far the slowest in our supported device range. :(

Actually, back in May 2017, I didn’t say that - I said: “Lightbox seems to simply be flaky across several platforms”.

I don’t think I mentioned PS3 at all - I’ve never used LB on a PS3 - I was talking about major LB problems on a two-year-old Samsung Smart TV.

Lightbox is now the most responsive app on Tizen. Nice work : ).

Netflix is a dragging swamp in comparison with some exceptions. Netflix shows do appear to start faster. Part of that is appearance only. Netflix animation playing in anticipation every stream, ratings appearing first on black background, + small part may be caching in anticipation haven't looked.

One thing I do like about Netflix is the progress spinner. It is light thin and has a percentage. The lightbox spinner is chunky and a bit irritating by comparison.

Aside from that Netflix percentage is kind of meaningless and will hang at 25% but it does the job nicely for most people.

Handsomedan:

I don't have Lightbox.

Can I write to the Herald and complain about the outage anyway? It just seems like the right thing to do as a kiwi consumer...

P.S. Great communication and well done on front-footing it...especially in the Geekzone forums, where we are notoriously hard on one another.

Stuff provides a first rate service for that. You dont need to care, you just need an excuse to rant!

Went to continue watching Community last night only to find the show had been removed during the upgrade and all we have is the continue watching placeholder that fails to load anything.

After that trying to watch Handmaid's tale on the ps4 and it buffered every few seconds so we switched to the laptop plugged into the tv to stream it, not just the ps3 app being flaky by what I saw.

Once on the laptop it was fine, however the selection screen for standard vs premium is poorly laid out, the selection options were off the bottom of the 1080p screen and the scroll bar was grayed out so the only option was to click the x in the top right corner to proceed. That was on win 10 and Firefox.

@Paul1977 - nailed it

@Handle9 - yep, and it's natural that we are compared to Netflix & Amazon, but it's not like-for-like. They both do their own programming (and I mean full, end-to-end studio type suff), a whilst we HAVE sponsored the creation of some content, it's not on the same scale. Also, the fact that they are global, have a ton of money & huge audiences mean they can make deals that are (more) favourable for them. So yes, we'd love to be just like them, but the reality is right-holders look at a homegrown SVOD/TVOD outfit in NZ in a different light.

@Dial111 - in the backlog, yes, along with 5.1 sound

@eracode - I was ribbing ya ;) It's funny because I think the PS3 app is flaky also

@gzt - glad ya like it; we have been testing on a 2017 Tizen and it's slick AF...

@Poll - that's strange, we do still have Community on the service: https://www.lightbox.co.nz/series/community ... has the migration perhaps not taken your resume/progress point properly? Or can you not find it at all? And thanks for the feedback on the plan upgrade screen...are you sure it was 1080p and not 1280x1024

Watched the next ep of Handmaids Tale last nite.  I see that lightbox has followed Netflix with this terrible graphics over the end titles telling you that the next program starts in so many seconds.  Preferred it the way it was..

@GeorgefromLightbox

Definitely 1080p. retested on my 1080p desktop now and it's fitting on the screen fine, will retest on laptop again, I'm thinking she may have dpi scaling or similar cranked up so I don't think that's a lightbox issue.

Regarding Community it shows in our continue watching list and came up with something went wrong when trying to resume, searching for Community brought up no results and looking through every tv show did not show it either. That was searching on the ps4 app. Didn't bother testing that on the laptop at the time. I've just searched for it now on my desktop pc and Community is showing, may be more Playstation app gremlins (I did close the app on the ps4 and reopen it to test it wasn't a caching issue, also was after a system update so it's on the latest ps4 firmware.).

Damn, the old platform worked well; I mean I can understand the slowness in the menus (time goes by etc), but is there anything in the new upgrade that would affect the ability to buffer a consistent stream?

I assume that’s in response to my question about whether the 5 device limit is a contractual obligation.

Seems like a lose-lose situation that benefits no one. But if that’s the terms of the agreement, then that’s just how it has to be I guess.

Purely speculation, but maybe the rights holders wanted more money from Lightbox to allow a higher device limit. I don’t expect anyone from Lightbox to comment on that theory (nor should they).

At least the question is answered, thanks @GeorgefromLightbox.

Well, please don’t ‘rib’ me in that fashion - I don’t appreciate being misquoted.
