I don't think "an exodus of traditional satellite pay-TV subscribers" is sufficient to explain all this recent activity. My speculation is it feels more like the panicky response of an incumbent who believes a major competitor is about to enter the market. Rumours, anyone?

A new player would likely want to partner with a large ISP, and Sky has now tied two of them up (Vodafone and Spark) leaving only the group of Vocus brands - Slingshot, Orcon and Flip (based on recent history with Sky, that deal was never going to happen).

Sky has deliberately turned the mobile market into a loss leading battleground which suggests mobile is a key play for this new entrant. That would rule Fetch TV out as they're tied to a set top box. Amazon Prime does mobile but it's not really their unique selling point.

Mobile? This is just a cheap option, no more, no less. Mobile wont take over any SVOD.Not until our phones are 50 inch...

Mobile only eh? How is the family going to watch the ABs' Test match on my 4" phone?

Just checking big magnifying glasses with a stand, add 4 stools.

Ah, we can then see score, that'll do.

I'm actually wondering what is preventing this from being installed on other Android devices - if it is simply an app store limitation or if they've got checks encoded in the app itself.

Like - lets just say if we were to somehow "load" the .apk onto a "phone like device" that connects to the TV (fill in the blanks here).

Was thinking that myself.

Have side loaded several tablet apps onto my Sony android TV.

Just like when Samsung had exclusive rights to a particular app (can't remember which) and sideloading the apk on any device worked.

That was my initial thought when reading about the restrictions, can I just sideload to my TV.. time will tell

Anybody know if it is possible to stop somebody from using MHL (HDMI out functionality on smartphones such as Samsung S3, S4, S5 etc).

If not, seems like the obvious way to get the image from your mobile to a big screen. (although Samsung hasn't bothered with it for its newer smartphones)

List of compatible devices here:

You will be lucky if resolution is 512x288. Yuck, not on my TV.

This +1

Despite many mobile devices being full HD or greater, and for many years now, I fully suspect Sky's definition of mobile is something suitably yuck.

Probably looks good if you put your small phone screen 1 - 2m away from you...

Maybe content would be resolution limited?

Comes with free resolution limiting, to help minimise your mobile data consumption wink

Fanpass already has this. You can limit the bitrate to as low as 144 kb/s for when you want to reduce your data usage.

I'm not sure what's Sky's deal is with this $16 deal. Surely the bandwidth used for viewing on a mobile device is the same as streaming via Chromecast. One is $16 per month, and the other is $56 per month.

You can see the logic, you just have to pretend like it's 2009.

Selling to their phone will open up a new group of customers, ones who instatwit and bookface a lot, without cutting into their current customer base with real TV's.

Works well until you point out the obvious ability to cast it to the TV.

Fanpass is and always was what a lot of people were after, just higher res and more reliable.  Sky did that stupid thing of pricing it beyond what people could stomach, again to protect their TV customer base, and then Sky had the audacity to say we tried streaming options and people didn't want it!?!

Didn't they try this once before when Vodafone launched 3G? At least now you'll be able to make out what is going on, hopefully.
