DS9: NBC Universal has just won the right to buy Sky UK, that being so, hopefully if they buy Sky NZ too, we'll have access to the technology that Sky UK is currently using and more importantly developing.

If you think a company that size is interested in the NZ market, for anything other than milking as much profit from it's existing infrastruture, and instead will invest to grow the market and supply new and better technology, I think you are mistaken.

I hope they don't want their dish back.

I don't know if Sky being sold would be good or bad, but I suspect a lot of local rugby would disappear (if sold to an American company) in favour of cheaper American sport being shown on TV. I could be wrong, I don't really care about sport anyway :)

Sky have indicated they want to market an everything content box that would include other offerings like Netflix, Lightbox as well as Skys own content. Not sure we should encourage this. If there is a desire for an everything box then it should be a Freeview box which could also offer encrypted contact. You should be able to buy it and then pay for non free contact.

Locking contact up is a private box is bad

What Sky are talking about is just a android box where you can load whatever apps you want(ie lightbox, netflix, sky on demand options) delivered over an internet connection. So it would be pretty limited(ie not a freeview box with epg and recording functionality).

If it is like the Foxtel Now box, it will come with a FTA tuner built in. At the very least it should include the catch-up apps from TVNZ, MediaWorks and Māori TV.

From memory the dishes supplied by Sky were rejects from Australia and instead of supplying a decent sized dish to NZ they went with the reduced size which accounts for so many of the dropouts on Sky Rain Fade etc etc

I hope they don't want their dish back.

So why would anyone want it then. If you cannot record content and with EPG it would not be as good as the current skybox. Freeview can duplicate any specification if required and should be the first port of call not Sky. Trouble is there is a certain amount of pressure for TVNZ to get out of Freeview and it may end up being owned by RNZ and TV3

RE: dishes SKY used dishes from 65cm upwards to 1.2M (Commercial installs) depending on location and based on the satellite footprint of the old B1 satellite. Which was actually more focussed on southern NZ. West Coast South Island actually in high rainfall regions got 76CM as the standard install. Far nothern NZ got 90cm+

The most common "rainfade issue" isnt in fact rain, its the LNBF expiring due to ageing. 6-8 years is about the lifespan of most lnbf.

Not once have I seen on sky's facebook page them tell a customer to go into the menu and watch the signal strength TEST page. They would rather tell someone just to reset their decoder!

That seems the wrong way around - I'd expect the far north to have a higher look angle and not need a larger dish - is there some other factor at play?

Just had a look at the Wiki link and it says "Bravo is the second New Zealand television channel owned and operated by MediaWorks New Zealand and NBCUniversal International Networks, broadcast via the state-owned Kordia transmission network and on MediaWorks' website ThreeNow. The channel launched on 3 July 2016. Bravo focuses on design, food, glamour and pop culture.[1]"

Bravo is crap (IMO) and a complete waste of a channel. I don't know anyone who watches it. Does it actually feature in the ratings, anywhere, at all?

Remember he’s talking about B1 ,which wasn’t as strong a signal and had a different footprint to D1
