And what's wrong with that (taxpayers money (my money!) going to help Sky's bottom line)? At least taxpayers have a fair and even choice now. Isn't it more fair that taxpayers money goes to all parties instead of TVNZ? Previously, the majority of the portion of my tax money that funded TVNZ was used to fund uncompetitive behaviour (not allowing their channels on Sky). It's about being fair to the taxpayer and giving people the freedom to choose the platform to view channels that they fund.

If I pay for a Sky sub why would I want my taxes going to them also...the whole point of difference between the two networks is that you pay for Sky therefore it is already funded by it's subscribers, it is an independant entity with a sole purpose to make money for it's shareholders.

TVNZ has more purpose than to just make money for it's shareholders (although National could very well change this), They must broadcast local content, make local content, and survive from advertising revenue alone almost.

Freedom to choose would also imply that Sky would put Prime on Freeview and they would show all or the Nationaly important All Black rugby matches live on Prime as well. But we don't have freedom to choose with the current setup even after TVNZ start broadcast TVNZ6 and 7 on Sky. I won't be watching the next Olmypics but that is because I am not going to pay for TV ever.

How many fingers do you have on one hand. I quickly counted 8 shows on TVNZ that are or have been on in HD.

So ... after checking on FreeView's web site, the situation appears to be:

- No HDMI connection, no HD content, only SD

At the moment for MySkyHDi you can get HD sports, but not movies or TV3 over component, and I wouldn't expect any difference for TVNZ.

Also, now that TVNZ is going to increase it's potential viewership as a direct result of this decision, revenue might improve. As a taxpayer and 'shareholder' this makes much more sense than TVNZ's previously restricitive policies.
Before you say that Prime should reciprocate and be on Freeview consider that Prime is not funded by your taxes and therefore it is an entirely separate issue.

What are you talking about? TVNZ is free to air. While some may argue you need to get freeview equipment in order to see the HD feed etc etc. Once those are done it's free. Sure you need a TV to watch TV too, so I guess there is some "pre required equipment"....

But no on ongoing charges.

TVNZ should've given them permission to use the SD feeds on D1 as is.

However, if you think about it even slightly - Sky must be paying TVNZ for the access to the HD feeds.

I imagine all this has been said before now in this thread - but I couldn't let the "restrictive commercial blah blah blah" go past me...

good point, BUT when they do have good stuff, it'd be quite nice to have it via Sky as well.

Agreed. This is just TVNZ selling it's products to SKY which falls in timely with the government demanding a dividend from TVNZ.

Where's the Prime on Freeview? Prime is FTA but only on analogue. Could the government please step up to the plate here?

The best thing the govt could do would be to kick-start the analogue turn-off. This would meant that Prime would have to either switch to Freeview or give up its govt funding.

It's my right to pay for what I want. I don't feel the need to explain why I have Sky because it is my choice. Today, I have no choice about how to watch content on TVNZ 6 and TVNZ that I pay for. I am subsidising people with Freeview.

Today I have to pay taxes to NOT get TVNZ 6 and TVNZ 7 PLUS the cost of a DVB-T or DVB-S box to get those channels. From July 1st I get what I pay for and don't have to pay for another set top box.
