I got an official reply a couple of weeks ago.

Sky confirmed at that time they would be covering the practise, qualifying and race sessions of all GPs.

They are NOT going to taken anything else like the qualy and race pre-shows or other material through the season. They also hadn't determined what commentary they are going to have.

It's like they WANT me to go find a dodgy stream on the internet for the really interesting stuff.

Cheers - N

Sky are just a giant vcr. Bare minimum to get subscribers hence I refuse to get Sky. My own little crusade. I'm an F1 nut but the way fans are treated kind of annoys me. Same with rugby a bit. You pay all this money but all the decent shows are on the Rugby Channel which you pay more for. Blows.

I love the pre race info which you kind of get during practice sesh's. I also enjoyed the TV1 pre race coverage when they had it. It's a nice way to ease into the race.

My 2c...

Go Mclaren.

I looked into what it would take to get Sky NZ out of the equation entirely and it's insane what it would cost to do it legally...

You can buy a monthly SKY (UK) online subscription which includes their F1 Channel for 50 pounds/month !!! On top of this you would need a VPN for about another $10/month I guess... So to have access to all the races and pre-shows etc live, that's about $110/month.

As much as I would like to stick it to the man here... That's silly money. I'll turn on Sky sports for teh F1 season (I cancel it after the last race each year) and I'll track down dodgy feeds of the pre-shows for each race.

I don't begrudge Sky NZ for doing what they are doing... F1 fans can't be that big a market in NZ compared to other sports fans - and they are a private company that can and should do whatever they want to maximise their returns. I happen not to like it, but I understand and accept why they do it.

There's also the fact that even though I think they are giving terrible service to F1 fans in NZ, there's no better legal option in NZ. The dodgy options are great, and free, but you would have to watch the race ultra early the next morning or the next evening...

I prefer to do it legally if it all possible.

Cheers - N

Neil. Terrible service to F1 fans in NZ?

I dont agree. We get FP1, 2 and 3, and Qualy, and Race, and commentary all through those, so for one 305km race we get 1.5 hrs, 1.5 hrs, 1 or 1.5 hours for FP3, 1 hour for qualy and 2 hours for the race. Thats 7 or 7.5 hours coverage?

I think thats good coverage myself.

I agree with what you say.

For me the best solution in this modern world of ours is that companies like BBC develop essentially a world wide service where people can purchase their content from anywhere. This would be a prime example of it working for me. Say idk $20 NZD a month for a BBC sport subscription. I know with the way rights are done this is never going to happen or a long way off. But it is competition to Sky and should not be a problem...

A new way of delivering live sport exists and is out there but it is just not marketd properly or the rights currently don't exist.

For me its not about buying live coverage and dumping it on Sky Sport 2 or 3 its about the overall quality of the presentation of the sport. I appreciate this argument could be extended to any sport they show but rugby is a classic example of how the stiff customers. You pay all this money for rugby but for any interest shows or extended build up to matches you must pay more for a Rugby Channel. That doesn't sit well with me.

I also like to argue that F1 is one of the biggest motosports in the world and deserves the special treatment of race build up! :-P

scotteffone How much buildup do you want? We get 7.5 hours per race, with commentary before, during and after. My point is that if we did have more legal access for sport, how much are we prepared to pay for multiple subscriptions? Some lucky users may have everything on the one subscription, but thats probably not common.

As has been touched on, it's about the quality, not the quantity of the coverage... Some examples...

We haven't received the Qualifying or Race Preshows. These have been ultra high vallue productions and are extremely informative and entertaining. I have been watching these through dodgy online streams live before the races.

The F1 is without fail the sport that gets dumped if there's contention for airtime with other live sports. Several of the practises and even one of the qualifying sessions have even been rescheduled due to NON-LIVE RUGBY REPLAYS.

Sky NZ confirmed just yesterday they haven't even figured out what commentary feed they are going to take this year and the Adelaide race is less than 2 weeks away...

They're taking a very low value approach to the F1. Compare this to the incredible service that Sky in the UK are giving. A fulltime channel for F1. Online services, I wouldn't be surprised if they have multiple live feeds to follow you favourite driver during the race.

Clearly not all of this can be justified in a market the size of NZ but it is gutting they won't even take the quali and race pre-shows... They have been great value.

Cheers - N

Agreed, I remember qualifying being delayed from midnight to like 6am cause of the netball world champs, and it was a nothing game between two nothing teams.

And it's the Melbourne race...

I think the existing distribution models are always going to hold this back. I can't see BBC's worldwide being able to distribute the content here in NZ any time soon.

I'd pay Sky for the channels I want. I object to the model that means I have to buy the basic package at $45 and then upgrade to sport for another $25.29, and if I want HD I have to pay another $15 or $20 to get an HD capable recording device and then pay an extra $10 for HD.

In our house we'd want Sky only for sport, and even then we're talking some rugby, the warriors only league games and the F1. So maybe 3 events max per week during the sporting seasons. There's not even an F1 replay the same weekend on Prime. That just makes watching F1 an expensive decision.

But hey, with only one provider, zero competition, I guess it a bonus we can at least see it here in NZ at all.
