Talkiet: I got an official reply a couple of weeks ago.
Sky confirmed at that time they would be covering the practise, qualifying and race sessions of all GPs.
They are NOT going to taken anything else like the qualy and race pre-shows or other material through the season. They also hadn't determined what commentary they are going to have.
It's like they WANT me to go find a dodgy stream on the internet for the really interesting stuff.

scotteffone:
Sky are just a giant vcr. Bare minimum to get subscribers hence I refuse to get Sky. My own little crusade. I'm and F1 nut but the way fans are treated kind of annoys me. Same with rugby a bit. You pay all this money but all the decent shows are on the Rugby Channel. Blows.
My 2c...
Go Mclaren.

All that, +1?

Talkiet: I looked into what it would take to get Sky NZ out of the equation entirely and it's insane what it would cost to do it legally...
You can buy a monthly SKY (UK) online subscription which includes their F1 Channel for 50 pounds/month !!! On top of this you would need a VPN for about another $10/month I guess... So to have access to all the races and pre-shows etc live, that's about $110/month.
As much as I would like to stick it to the man here... That's silly money. I'll turn on Sky sports for teh F1 season (I cancel it after the last race each year) and I'll track down dodgy feeds of the pre-shows for each race.
I don't begrudge Sky NZ for doing what they are doing... F1 fans can't be that big a market in NZ compared to other sports fans - and they are a private company that can and should do whatever they want to maximise their returns. I happen not to like it, but I understand and accept why they do it.
There's also the fact that even though I think they are giving terrible service to F1 fans in NZ, there's no better legal option in NZ. The dodgy options are great, and free, but you would have to watch the race ultra early the next morning or the next evening...
I prefer to do it legally if it all possible.

tdgeek: Neil. Terrible service to F1 fans in NZ?
I dont agree. We get FP1, 2 and 3, and Qualy, and Race, and commentary all through those, so for one 305km race we get 1.5 hrs, 1.5 hrs, 1 or 1.5 hours for FP3, 1 hour for qualy and 2 hours for the race. Thats 7 or 7.5 hours coverage?
I think thats good coverage myself.

Talkiet: The F1 is without fail the sport that gets dumped if there's contention for airtime with other live sports. Several of the practises and even one of the qualifying sessions have even been rescheduled due to NON-LIVE RUGBY REPLAYS.
Sky NZ confirmed just yesterday they haven't even figured out what commentary feed they are going to take this year and the Adelaide race is less than 2 weeks away...

And it's the Melbourne race...
