Another minor issue solved.
When I installed our IGLOO Box I looped the aerial fed back out of the set top box and into the TV
This in theory enabled us to revert to standard FREEVIEW HD to view Teletext on Channel One
However at the time Ch 1/2 and several others would not tune in with the aerial signal looped through.

After yesterdays IGLOO set to box reboot to solve the guide problem the tuning issue with FREEVIEW HD has resolved itself. All channels tune perfectly on FREEVIEW HD and teletext works just fine.

However its a tad of a moot point as Teletext ends April 2013

Having said that it does point to the power of a IGLOO Set top box reboot as a resolution for problems?

$1 movie streaming sounds awesome, just the encouragment I need to register my Igloo. Go through all the process, now lets see what is available on demand. Message you need an internet connection for that. Hmm, I am sure I configured my wireless up, check my laptop, yep wireless is going, ok run a lan cable instead, again check it on my laptop first, plug it into Igloo, no go. Reboot igloo, wireless comes up cool, then about 15 minutes later it dies again, great I have a faulty NIC card, well at least I have the 11 xtra channels to choose from, wow they really do suck as well, let's reboot again and see if my Nic card settles down. Nope. Oh well at least there is Graham Norton...

sheesh, they must be getting desperate if they are dropping it to half price already after less than 4 months in market. The next TiVo?

Probably not the same problem as TiVo - I suspect they are prepared to sell the box at (or even below) cost to get them into homes, in the expectation that they can turn the profit from selling content afterwards. Essentially the same model as paying for peoples' satellite installs below cost, to make profits from the recurring subscription revenue. Sky are fairly smart and have decent technical and financial muscle behind them, so they will probably make it work.

In contrast, TiVo essentially had to make all its money on the hardware sale, and then provide ongoing servers and the EPG etc, essentially without a recurring revenue stream after the sale. Unless of course, you count CASPA, which was useless and stillborn from the start. The minute they couldn't make a decent up-front margin from selling the hardware at a good price and in volume, they were screwed.

Also the south island digital deadline of the 28th is coming up so you have a market that needs a product, reduce the price to get the unstall numbers up.

For anyone thinking of purchasing ...

Got a flyer the other day with a promo code, only valid for phone orders until May 19th, for $99 delivered.
When I actually phoned and placed an order, found out there is no promo code required - $99 deal is available for all phone orders at present. Ordered it yesterday, arrived today.

There are a number of new/used units on Trademe, but don't think have been going for less than $100.

Will evaluate it's capabilities and see how it goes. Thinking of ditching sky with a view to just watching the occasional PPV event.

Well Igloo is now officially a dog,

Sales expectations have gone from 50K to 30K and now to 19K, thats gotta be burning a big hole in the break even timeline....

"it announced it had cut its sales targets for discount pay-television joint venture Igloo and now expected to ship only 19,000 Igloo boxes this year, following its launch in December.

There you go. And for THAT TVNZ ditched the TiVo partnership, killed TVNZ7 from FTA, killed KidsZone (a great FTA channel).

Sell outs.

sigh.... why don't tvnz just stick to broadcasting. all their other side ventures seem to be dismal failures.

They haven't killed kidzone, they have just put it where it costs since people tend to complain about advertising targeting children which is the only other way of getting a profitable kids channel.

I haven't seen that side of igloo really marketed at all, even tho its on there. the lack of multiple boxes has really put off someone I know who was considering it as an option for their kids tv's

Their TiVo venture could have been, and should have been, a success. If only TVNZ's execution hadn't been utterly and totally incompetent.

Among other things, they needed to:
  • put it in all main stream retailers, not just try and sell through Telecom
  • use their marketing muscle to aggressively promote it from day one
  • have a gigantic back catalogue of TVNZ material available for streaming at low cost from day one, to entice people
  • have a decent downloadable film/TV service, not the awful CASPA with excessive prices and virtually no attractive content
  • maybe partner with Sky to have a package of exclusive channels available on a monthly subscription basis, as per Igloo, for TiVo subscribers only (then Sky wouldn't have needed to worry about the hardware side of the business)
  • maybe partner with Spotify/Pandora or similar to have a decent subscription music service
  • have attractive features available at zero or low cost from day one - an app that lets people programme the TiVo over the net, not gouge $100+ to enable simple home network connectivity.
On the Sky/Spotify/alternate-CASPA options, a third party could provide the service, and TVNZ could just have done the billing and clipped the ticket, for a recurring revenue stream (which TiVo doesn't now have and needs for viability).

Had they done this, way before many other FV recorders existed, there is a very good chance they would have had decent market penetration, first-mover advantage for content, and a successful ongoing business.
