I wasn't discussing contracts. I was pointing out the irony of the advertising making something look bad, the same thing its own parent company offers. That's all.

The technique they are employing is to give the impression of separation and as such competition, competition that really is an illusion.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Its very sad that this is the best we have to look forward to as far as NZ TV is concerned.I hope the regulators move quickly to sort this out and get some real competition.

Real competition does not come from regulators.

As long as they don't fragment things and drive costs up. Hypothetically, f the sports rights were broken sup so, say, Sky had Super 15 while Telstra had the All Blacks and someone else (a new entrant?) had the warriors; then a rugby fan would have to sign up to three pay TV services rather than one to get the sport they want. As well as the hassle of cabling/managing three subscriptions and types of set-top box, I doubt this would be cheaper than the current situation.

Sure doesn't come from the open and free market .  Remember Telecom back about 10 years ago ??

When have you ever known government and regulators to move quickly?

Real competition cannot happen unless the environment exists to stop monopolistic behavior. Sky and TVNZ's cozy partnership and the one sided agreements with all the ISP's are really hurting the likes of quickflix. Don't get me started on the digital rights either.

As a comparison do you honestly think the mobile landscape would be as competitive as it is today without the likes of 2degrees? Do you think 2degrees had any show of succeeding without the regulatory path being paved to enable fair and equal competition.

You're right, real competition doesn't come from regulators, but they certainly have a huge part to play in enabling it.

aaron11: Isnt it 25 dollars with a few sky channels and a recorder??

Id be up for it if I could say having living and the CI channel or a few others

That's still $300 / year.

I, personally,  don't see enough additional content over what Freeview offers to justify spending the money.

It's a pity they haven't launched yet, what with the Euro 2012 and all, and now that SBS on D1 has disappeared (for NZers) recently.

It's only going to be worth it if they offer substantial PPV content at a realistic price.

PPV will be interesting as with our population and number of subscribers the amount to be charged will be critical.

For others talking about competition, movies is fine but for sports the cost to be able to cover them will always mean NZ can only really have 1 PAYTV sports service.

Unless we get some really heavy-handed regulation - break up Sky a la Telecom, instead of Chorus, have a sports production company that must sell to all-comers on an equal basis.

I would be interested in Igloo if it was a PVR. Other than that - fail. I am stuck with MySky, I want the Sport.

But the regualtors sometimes need to step in the cases of small markets like NZ's, when there is only one or two operators. Look at the NZ mobile market, it needed a lot of help to get 2D going, and that has been good for consumers, as it has brought in some competition.
