Google have a lot of control these days over the internet and various standards. Lightbox is also broken on IE, as it now pops up with a security warning about mixed content, as mentioned by another poster above. When you do agree, it often plays videos without any sound.

Thanks for the feedback on IE. What version are you using?

This is a question of Google moving off an established standard - not unlike iOS not supporting Flash. Their suggestion is to use their DRM technology, which isn't widely supported.

It should be the latest version, which on windows 7 is , 11.0.9600.17691 . I first noticed it on windows 10 IE after I couldn't get chrome to work, but it does the same under windows 7 IE 11

Thanks.

Most annoying thing is that this it pops up BEHIND the video window. Went in and out of Lightbox several times before I noticed two IE instances in the task bar. It seems that if I don't switch to and click on this message, the video never loads or its just picture no sound.

Both are Windows 7 64-bit. IE is 11.0.9600.17728.
Update Versions 11.0.18 (KB3038314)

Gave up trying with Firefox a few weeks ago after a Silverlight update/re-install.

Never tried Chrome. Knowing my luck I will probably will have similar problems there. Still. Got a few DVD box sets to work through until I try Chromecast.

From what I can tell, IE is now the only way to watch lightbox, but you now get that popup (or rather pop under). Firefox is temperamental too, it sometime works and sometimes doesn't. Also have to activate silverlight each time. Opera doesn't work at all

The problem is that it is becoming more and more difficult and fiddly to watch lightbox. Doesn't appear to be available on android mobiles (at least not my samsung galaxy), or iOS (eg not the iphone or ipod) apart from the ipad, which is quite a good app, but missing chromecasting ATM. Really they need an app like googles Youtube app for mobiles, as it is simple to use and casting is like using the mobile is like using a tv remote control. I guess that Youtube will eventually turn into a monthly streaming service like lighbox , as you can already rent movies through the app, and I believe they are looking at implementing a monthly fee to remove ads. So Google do certainly have a lot of influence. I do feel sorry for Lightbox having to counteract all these issues, which are somewhat outside their control. But I think they do need to push the mobile apps market as their top priority, so they aren't having to worry so much about these browser plugins. In a way I think these DRM counter measures are a waste of time and only penalize the legitimate users, but it is probably the studios who make the rules.

They shoulda had more foresight and gone with HTML5 rather than already-creaky-at-that-stage Silverbloat.

Just to clarify a couple of things:

  • Silverlight is still being updated and won't be end of life for a good number of years.
  • Netflix still serves much of their browser content via Silverlight, as not all browsers support the protection schemes needed to protect content in HTML5 video.
  • HTML5 protected video is at this stage pretty creaky still, with plenty of performance, security and stability issues. It's also only supported by a subset of browsers, whereas Silverlight was supported across the board until Chrome started deprecating NPAPI.
I don't dispute that everything will move to HTML5 along the way, though.

I only hope you are on the free offer and not actually paying for the service

Hey, Win XP was still being updated up until recently - that's no marker of whether or not it's time to saddle up the horses and move on.

Yeah - I've had a heck of a time with HTML5 videos on YouTube and Netflix and Google. Just slow and crashes. And that's across all of my browsers on multiple os's, including Linux. To be fair those guys *are* small players, so once it becomes mainstream.... /sarcasm

@ Lightbox: on reflection, that sarcasm was uncalled for. Good luck to you guys in developing your range of services and platforms using the strategies you see fit.

Isn't silverlight being disabled on all major browsers later this year? Hasn't Microsoft already announced end of life??

Chrome is the only one disabling it (though likely others would follow suit if it works out for Google).

Unless Lightbox can quickly expand it's reach and bring on more supported devices quickly as in not snails pace it will need to confirm its reservations at the Dodo Hotel.
