grant_k: I cancelled Sky back in June after being on the Basic package for over 20 years.  With the plethora of streaming services available (in particular CuriosityStream) there will be no looking back.

So what kind of shows does it have (without vpn please). I hate sites you see nothing unless signup. What am I signing up for, sigh. See on the FB page lots I like inc Dr. Michio Kaku, Rosetta and Henry V stuff.

Canceled Sky about a year ago, have not missed it one bit. It was expensive and I was not impressed with the content or the quality (had the MySky HD box). Was told when signing up that I would need the HD ticket to see HD channels, even after telling them I did not want the sport or movie packages (so basically was given wrong information and paid more than I had to).

Did get myself a Freeview satbox I've been using to see live TV now and then, but thats not connected either these days. Can see what I want through the Smart-TV apps and the various streaming devices I have.

Same. Why hide content that might make me sign up? Netflix is the same. But, we have a recommendation. Its cheap (why?)  So well worth a paid trial for a month for a few bucks.

Everyone hates sky. They are as well liked as the IRD.

I won't be cancelling them yet, I'll wait until after the cricket finishes for the season and wait for 3 months before going onto the next promotional deal (like I did this year 😀)

A pity really, as IMO Sky used to be okay (back in the UHF days).

I cancelled about 4 months ago and haven't missed it at all.

What they did offer me was the ability to keep the decoder and only have free to air channels for $15/month.  It means that I don't have to sort out freeview, have an HD feed and the ability to record stuff.  Not a bad deal I thought.....

Go to their web site, click on the YouTube link at the bottom. Lots of examples of their content there.

Edit: I was replying to comments about Curiosity site. Something went wrong.

MikeB4: No, Freeview has been destroyed. Sky still has the only true Sports coverage and in HD. I have Netflix as well so fully covered with Vodafone TV (Sky option) and Netflix

Agree, that Freeview has been destroyed, but don't go catching a case of Stockholm syndrome. Sky destroyed FTA by out-bidding FTA channels for the sports rights, knowing that the victims, I mean viewers, would make it worth while for Sky, by subscribing and rewarding Sky for taking away what was previously free.

I cancelled my SkyTV account ages ago because the content was so woefully inadequate and with the money saved I've gone flat rate fibre and bought the new Apple TV where I stream (via AirPlay) from my computer to my Apple TV stuff from services that aren't available on Apple TV whilst also watching a tonne of content on YouTube including live streaming from France 24 and Al Jazeera. The thing that holds me back from Lightbox is the lack of live streaming news - if they offered 4-5 channels of live streaming news pulled off the satellite along side their on demand content then it would the ideal service provider for me.

TDGeek:  The first month is free, regardless of whether you chose SD or HD resolution.  We have 7 days left on our free trial and will definitely become paying members when the time comes.

Quinny:  I just counted up the Michio Kaku titles and there are 21 without using VPN.  With it there are also 21.

There is one Rosetta Comet Chaser title without VPN (not sure if that's the one you're after).
7 titles for Rosetta with VPN (Rosetta Comet Chaser and Egypt episodes x 6).

Nothing for Henry VI without VPN, only one title with VPN (Shakespeare and Us).  Not sure if that's what you're after.

It's interesting that all of the Michio Kaku titles are available to NZ subscribers -- probably because they are produced by NHK Japan and hence have no existing content distribution agreements with Sky et al.  I've watched a couple of those and they are really good.

Maybe you're still under the impression that a VPN is difficult to use?  I have UnoVPN and it costs me US$1 per month extra on top of my UnoTelly subscription (approx NZ$5 per month).  With Windows 10 it takes just 2 clicks to turn on my VPN, and 2 or 3 seconds while it connects.  It's even quicker to disconnect when I've finished, so no bother at all.

I used to defend Sky reasonably staunchly, and if you go back far enough on GZ there are a few posts from me doing just that. But over the years as their service offering and attitude to subscribers has got worse I have gone off them, and am now frequently thinking about cancelling. Ad saturated with too many silly distractions (voiceovers, spinning logos, giant clannel logos that aren't nicely tucked in a corner) to be really enjoyable to watch nowadays. And somewhat overpriced compared to the competition and alternative options, esp with a VPN.

I will be keeping them until the new year, although I have just dropped another channel (Rialto) that I wasn't watching to bring costs down a wee bit. I have guests staying over Christmas, and until I have finished rebuilding my network Netflix and Lightbox et al are pretty much constrained to the Telly in the living room and my PC/Tablet (which I don't watch things on).

I plan to do some serious geekery over the Christmas break. Once the network and home entertainment reconfiguration is complete, and I can pipe alternatives to the other two TVs, Sky will be an endangered species in this house.
