If TVNZ (TV1 and TV2) and Mediaworks (TV3) are in HD via satellite from 1st June then longterm is it necessary for them to also be on HD Terrestrial? If their progammes are unencrypted on Sky then one could buy a satellite HD box (or receivers having a satellite decoder in-built as already happens overseas). At analogue switch-off it is also terrestrial switch-off. Then we would no longer need the faulty ET and Zinwell HD-T STBs. Plus look at the transmission costs saved by Mediaworks and TVNZ. Food for thought!!!

I don't think so.
First of all Sky is the one paying for the satellite space, so hence why they are encrypted, because you have to pay them to use it.
Second of all there are very very few receivers in the NZ market that will do HD DVB-S(2), as opposed to several thousand already setup for terrestrial.
Thirdly Transmission costs wouldn't be saved, its more expensive to rent satellite space than it is terrestrial space (i'd say so anyway), and that leads back to point 1 where someone has to pay it, and therefore it wont be unencrypted.
Lastly you'd make all terrestrial receivers sold obselete, and even if they had this decision to use HD satellite instead of terrestrial, i'd still say they would've chose terrestrial.

Our TV has built in FreeviewHD and the picture quality of One news (seems to me) is WAY better than TV3 news on Sky HDi. I've never been sure why - was it the channel or the medium.

It'll be interesting to be able to finally compare like for like...

What does 3 News look like on Freeview compared to Sky's HDi?? That would be a better comparison..

Three news on Freeview is in SD.

When One News is on Sky HDi it'll HD on Sky and FreeView, so for the first time we'll be able to flick from Sky to FV and really see whose HD is better. That's what I meant.

When One News is on Sky HDi it'll HD on Sky and FreeView, so for the first time we'll be able to flick from Sky to FV and really see whose HD is better. That's what I meant.

DVB-T H.264 (Freeview HD) versions of both TV1 and TV3 news are simply upscaled SD. TV1 upscaled to 720p and TV3 upscaled to 1080i. So therefore you should be able to do a direct comparison of DVB-T and Sky HD transmissions of TV3 news upscaled to 1080i on both mediums.

Most likely next year before TVNZ manage HD news if even then and most likely only the studio cameras.

EDIT: That is, the (upscaled) H.264 1080i feeds of TV3 news should be identical. Most reports are that Sky HD feed is inferior to DVB-T.
