We're currently facing some serious performance issues - resulting false geo-blocks and other stuff. We've got all hands on deck, sorting it out.

Good luck.  Rome wasn't built in a day.

We believe that we've restored performance now.

Jakob did say " false geo-blocks and other stuff" A bit of detail and a bit generic, but the more important issue is that it wasn't due to capacity issues. Some of the technical detail maybe confidential also.

Hi guys,

I can't really give you all the details (partly because we're not sharing them, partly because I am no expert on this stuff), but we've had some issues around the scalability of our session management. The geoblocks were being thrown as an incorrect response to a performance issue. We've identified the root cause and we're working through both short term mitigation and long term resolution, so hopefully we're out of the woods. Streaming is pretty complicated stuff with lots of moving parts, though.

Lemming77: Is it me or is this failing for everybody?
I've had no luck since Friday evening - trying to watch the 5th episode of Vikings but it buffers after 3 minutes and then hangs - no error just buffering

Folks

I am still suffering sound stuttering problems on any newer programs (eg. Dream Machines which is 16:9 and probably higher def) but not on older SD programs such as Black Books when playing them on PCs. The same newer programs are playing fine on the iPad app.  I'm on a 40/10Mbps VDSL connection and the PCs were connected via a Gigabit Switch to the VDSL router (as opposed to the wireless iPad connection) so I doubt the issue is Internet or local bandwidth.

I've tried hard coding the DNS server entries as suggested earlier in this topic, as well as applying every MS update available to the OS. One PC was running Google Chrome and the other was running IE11 with the same result. CPU uitilisation seems a little high at around 50% while streaming/playing back (suggesting the CPU is performing the video decompression) but not enough to  think the CPU is bottlenecking.

I joined Lightbox late last week just as all the carnage happened with the DOS attack and DNS server problems so I initially put my problems down to this but unfortunately things still aren't right.

Any suggestions of other things I can look at before I give up on it and go back to 'other methods' ?

Cheers

Hi dklong,

Sounds to me like a Silverlight issue. You'll want to double check that your Silverlight version is up to date and that hardware acceleration hasn't been disabled in the Silverlight configuration.

Are you on Spark DNS?
Have you updated or reinstalled the latest version of Silverlight?

tdgeek:

Yep.. I'm on Spark DNS from the router. Even tried hardcoding them directly on the PC.
The Silverlight was installed when I set up Lightbox a week or so ago so I assume it is the latest but I can try re-installing it again.
Jakob has suggested a similar thing so I'll have a good look in that area and see what options I can find.

Thanks to both!

I know this might sound a bit illogical. But do you have Aero on or off?
My Aero was off on my HTPC to save resources as its not the biggest beast in the world.

But I was getting severe screen tearing and stuttering/frame skipping but only on that device.
I was reading a Microsoft KB article that suggested that Silverlight makes use of the settings in Aero, and to turn it back on to resolve the issue.

I thought this would negatively impact it even further, but what the hell, I will give it a shot.

It worked and most the tearing/skipping is gone now for me at least. Maybe worth a try for you, only takes a few seconds.

Oldmanakbar:
Thanks for the suggestion. As it turned out I had Aero on.  Later versions of MediaPortal also like it turned on for similar reasons.

I've done some more testing and I think I'm closing in on the issue. Although overall CPU utilisation is 35-55%, one core is closer to 85-90%. If I shrink the screen to only about 1/3 of a full screen then it plays OK and the utilisation of that single core goes down to less than 50%.  Hardware acceleration is definitely enabled in the Silverlight app but perhaps Silverlight doesn't like the Nvidia 9800GT I'm running. A pity as it is the Silent Pipe version with no fan so much quieter than other cards I've had.

Might do some research into compatible Silverlight cards.

Signed up not too long ago, and have been enjoying Parks and Recreation. I've just gone onto Season 2 and noticed that although I'm trying to play Episode 14, it is actually Episode 15 playing, and similarly for Episode 15 & 16 etc.

Other than that, it's been good. One minor thing though - I would prefer for the next episode to play automatically. I did like having the episode in the series saved, but for some reason or other, that hasn't been consistently.
