The funny thing is lightbox launched nearly an entire year after google said they were sunsetting it:
https://blog.chromium.org/2013/09/saying-goodbye-to-our-old-friend-npapi.html

September 2013.

edit: Yes there are issues with backwards compatibility with HTML5 EME. eg. you need IE11 on Win8.1, and Safari on Yosemite for the OSX side. Chrome's had it for ages so isn't a major. Regardless, it doesn't stop it being from being rather amusing.

Well, regardless, I'm sure Chromecast support is only a few days away now.

:-)

Wifey and I have decided to give up TV for a while, mainly as an experiment to reduce screen time for the kids.

So I am now selling the Chromecast i brought largely with a view to using it for my 12(13) months of free Lightbox.  Check Trade Me for an as-new Chromecast and get yourself a bargin :)

Would still love some proper Android support from Lightbox, and then I can then use my (non-samsung) phone and tablet, but even as a currently free proposition, i am afraid they are rapidly losing my mindshare.

Nice work. We haven't had TV here for a few months now due to either a faulty LNB or cabling issue. We've gotten used to not having it. Netflix and Youtube rule the roost here. Considering signing up to Lightbox again (been offered another free month) but I'd be unlikely to stay longer than that due to the restrictive device support which just doesn't fit in with our household.

You have a link to that Chromecast? I'm interested in getting a second one.

Looks like consumer have given  Lightbox a bit of a serve in terms of the compatibility problems, and the services not really being up to it yet, compared to the offshore providers. https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/opinion-strike-one-for-services

I wish they got together with Quickflix, (eg buy them out) as Quickflix have all the apps and are on most devices now. I can easily watch quickflix on all my devices, but they don't have the content.
Although it would be somewhat ironic, and a full circle for lightbox to end up on the Tivo, since Telecom started out originally selling the tivo. I would be even more ironic if Neon ended up buying it, and got onto the Tivo, being owned by Sky.

I
f you are interested :)

We never watched broadcast TV anyway (recorded the odd thing with a freeview recorder), but it was more the kids and too much screen time with dvds etc.  See how long we last now it is winter!

That's because it's against the rules of GZ.
Basically, an APK is an Intellectual Property of Lightbox.
So to share it outside its T&Cs is bordering on piracy. :)

Get one of those logiitech touchpads. That is what I use, one of the glass ones. Not sure if they still sell them in shops but you can get new ones cheaply on trademe.

It's in the news, it must be true....

http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/68130080/a-guide-to-tv-streaming-devices

"Google pitches Chromecast as your personal remote control. You use your device to pick what you want to watch and Chromecast streams that content from the internet and displays it on your TV so you can use it for Lightbox or Neon."

Have Stuff stuffed up again?

Probably. The article also mentions

If you want to use TVNZ and TV3's streaming apps on the big screen you are limited to Samsung smart TVs or casting them from your mobile device with Chromecast or Apple TV.

Using AirPlay to our Apple TV has never worked for the TVNZ On Demand or TV3 apps for us. The ad will play fine, but as soon as the content is about to stream, it will fail.

Same here,  when I see an update I think it has been released. I fear my 12 months of access will be up before it happens.
