Today I wanted to watch the final of the 2020 darts championship. I had a look on YouTube only to find Sky NZ had blocked all live feeds due to rights issues.

You block access and then add insult to injury by not providing an app with option to pay-for-view by event. If you had, I would have happily logged on and provided credit card details to view the final match. You would have been happy (you got my money) and I would have been happy (I would have settled in front of the telly for 90 mins to enjoy the final).

As it is, denying me all access because I'm not a long term subscriber just hardens my resolve against Sky.

Sky Sports Now ( used to be Fanpass ) week pass ($19.99) would have given you pay per view access to the final ( replay is currently on Sky sport 8, 1-3pm 2/1 ), plus access to highlights from all the previous rounds

Its nothing to do with SKY blocking youtube. They will have been sold exclusive streaming rights for NZ. The provider of the youtube stream will have excluded many countries.

Ah thanks, I had looked on Sky's main website, but the only options I could find were subscription based. There appears to be no mention of 'Sky Sport Now' on www.sky.co.nz under either sport or Sky apps (unless I missed it?) which is why I didn't pick up on this.

Extending Sky Sports Now to pay per view for events, as another option to week, would be a nice addition, with variable pricing determined on popularity and duration.

Subsequently, I have found and watched the darts final on YouTube.

Whoever blocked it did specifically reference the reason as Sky's rights.

So, as a non-subscriber, and vocal critic, this week I had unfettered access to Sky for 3 days.

Day one, we tried to watch a movie on Jones and gave up due to never-ending self promotion adverts (refer opening post).

This! I still have Sky, mostly due to inertia. But I never watch half the channels (Jones, History.... ) now as the level of interruptions with ads and promos makes them so painful they are essentially unwatchable. Mostly, it's just Movies SoHo and the odd flick to a news channel. If half the channels disappeared I probably wouldn't notice.

I have been muttering about Sky for a while now, and was having this discussion with my other half a couple of days ago. I need to spend a bit more money updating our home setup, and then we will ditch Sky. Currently trying to settle on a few more Roku Ultras or the NVida Shield as my preferred client. The combination of a VPN (for BBC etc) and a couple of streaming services will probably easily beat Sky on both price and watchability. But it's neither the content or the price that will ultimately make me ditch Sky, it's the incessant programming interruptions that ruin the whole viewing experience. Netflix and Disney+ don't inflict this viewers. I doubt the other paid streaming services will either.

(That, and the new decoder putting DRM on the SD analog outputs, which annoying broke my whole-of-house video distribution system, since fixed).

Nope still can not watch odd things like motortrendondemand (mtod) original content because some discovery content from 10+ years ago is available on the platform.
