hahahahaha.

Vodafone cant merge with Sky cos it might foreclose on other ISPs.

Spark et al reckon that denying the merger will lead to greater wholesaling and force Sky to innovate and sharpen its offer to consumers.

This looks like a good old fashioned middle finger to everyone.  In the absence of being able to merge and drive cost synergies Sky has no option but to raise prices to recover costs across its business.

The next thing Sky should do is shutdown Prime and replace it with delayed coverage of Sports, sports highlights and rolling infomercials about itself.  Thats gotta save $25m a year while paying lip service to the sports public.

hahahhahahahaa.

RugbyPass it is.

Have to find another way to watch the America's Cup.

If I could get one of those deals for Sky+Sport+HD/MySky for $50 a month (like I've heard of people getting) I'd probably do it. Can't justify $100 a month though. That tips me into looking for another way around (or going to the pub!)

America's Cup is on Sky-equivalent services in most countries, but for others offers a live streaming subscription via its own app. The app is available to everyone, but those in countries with pay TV deals will only see live graphics rather than actual footage. Unless someone can unblock it...

It's an interesting one for the sports business, as they slowly wake up to the music and film industry changes.

I now pay for music, as I subscribe (happily) to Spotify.
Spotify makes this easy.

Netflix makes TV easy.

Both are priced well.

Businesses are naive to think there aren't alternative options out there.
Make it easy and cost competitive though, and they will come.

Or, vice versa...

Both make it easy.  Spotify has never made a profit.  And only survives when investors tip more and more into it in the hope that it will make a profit someday.

Netflix barely makes a profit, its spending more and more and more on content (and borrowing debt to do so) and its investors are hoping that successive price increases over future years will drive it towards an economic return.

Easy yes.  Cost competitive - no, I think you mean uneconomic (ie ROIC<WACC).

Competitive in terms of placing your product pricing favourably in the market, from the customers perspective, when compared to the competitions offerings.

I don't care if your company makes money or not.

Thats fine.  But if the company ceases or the product offering is withdrawn from the market then you cant complain.  If a company doesnt make the returns to justify the risk from operating then it will eventually exit the market.

Lol maybe :)

Point is I would pay, if it was priced well enough.

Now they will get nothing.

Yes but if they aren't getting a benefit out of it i.e money in the first place, then that is to say the net gain is still Nothing, isn't it?

They were getting a benefit out of it, just not as large as they'd hoped for. Now the something many paid which offset the 'nothing' will become a much more definite nothing.

Just got this email:

Hi <name>,

We wanted to let you know about some changes we’re making to the passes available on Fan Pass.

We wanted Fan Pass to give Kiwis the freedom to dip in and out of sport by offering short-term flexible passes. However, sports rights aren’t cheap and it’s just not stacking up for us as much as we’ve tried to make it work. So we’ve had to make the following changes which will affect you:

- From 24th May, you’ll no longer be able to get a Day or Week pass on Fan Pass.

- The cost of the Month pass will increase from $55.99 per month to $99.99 per month from 24th May.

- We’ll be introducing a 6 Month pass which will be a one-off payment of $329.99. It’s a big payment upfront but it still works out as less than $2 a day which is pretty good value. That could give you the entire All Blacks Season from kick off to the final whistle.

If none of these changes are your cup of tea, SKY have got an offer where you can join SKY with no joining fee and get a $150 account credit on a 6 month Basic contract. If you want further information, call SKY on 0800 800 759.

The team at Fan Pass will still be working hard on the side line to make sure you’ve got a great sport streaming service to watch SKY Sport 1-4 and Pay-Per-View Events.

Thanks

The team at FAN PASS

Big sigh. Guess that's Fanpass off the table for the 'every now and then' situations I used it for...

Guess when you have to monopoly you can do this. May as well get Sky , Sports and HD for that price..

No monopoly. They bid for sports like everyone else. They lost golf, EPL, were about to lose V8 Supercars. If Sky don't buy it, someone else will = monopoly?

Dont forget that the NFL, NBA, AFL, Bundesliga and eSports are on Duke.  Which is TVNZ.  So you're quite correct - not a monopoly.

And dont forget that the Commonwealth Games are...... on TVNZ too.  Yep.  Still not a monopoly.

I'm looking for other streaming methods now.

Completely sucks. I was happy at the old prices, this is a rort. Wheres Winston when you need him!

But who is rorting?  Maybe get the individual sports subs from the sports providers? Golf, cricket, F1, Rugby and so on. Might pay to ask them why?
