No monopoly. They bid for sports like everyone else. They lost golf, EPL, were about to lose V8 Supercars. If Sky don't buy it, someone else will = monopoly?

 

 

That is the case to a degree, but IMO it mainly only applies for the more minor sports, which appear to be cheaper to buy the rights for. However whoever can afford to bid for the rugby, needs to have a very big paid customer base to be able to afford it.  The rugby one is really the crown jewel. Not sure if TVNZ could ever afford it.

Sky produces a lot of the rugby. Production costs are huge. I don't see anyone else lining up to do that.
