Freeview is not 'free'. It is paid for by stuffing as many moronically offensive ads as possible down the gullets of hapless viewers. I have seen TV in many countries and I have never seen TV anywhere else that expects people to sit through so much commercial crap. No-one who is not brain dead watches this any more. I have a friend who used to complain that he could never get through a film on Freeview because the constant 'breaks' (now there is a misnomer if there ever was one) would put him to sleep. He was technically unsophisticated so I found a second-hand DVR for him and set it up so he could skip past the interruptions. It improved his quality of life enormously. Freeview is dead. I don't care how many pluses it has. It committed suicide. The sooner everyone is streaming, the better.

Thats the UK model. GBP145 per year per household. It gets you the BBC. Many would say its a government funded monolith.

I can never understand comments like this. A typical program allows for about 15 minutes per hour of ads - you can easily see this when streaming as episodes are typically 22 or 45 minutes long. I've often heard the complaint that NZ has too many ads but I have always wondered if this is simply a perception issue, or perhaps the fact that the ads are more frequent with less, or less frequent but longer, but the idea that we have significantly more ads than other countries seems lost on me.

This being said I haven't had sky for years. $60+ with ads vs. $10-20 for streaming without is a no brainer to me. I'm not much of a sports fan which is a big factor of course.

Maori TV is far from free. Us taxpayers are fitting the bill. Something like $40 million a year.

Always amazes me how much better TVNZ/TV3 and even Prime are so much better than Maori TV, even without the funding.

Freeview is free IMO. Its 2015, and if you still watching live TV and adverts then maybe its time you realized we no longer living in the 1990's.

There is commercial tv as well. They seem to be able to manage a reasonable service with only one ad break in a half hour programme. I lived there until 2011 and never had a problem with ad breaks. When I came home I was shocked at how often, and how intrusive they are. Now that I have Netlix and iplayer (which I would gladly pay for), I feel my stress levels have lowered considerably.

I am appalled at how badly NZ viewers are treated by all the broadcasters.

When anyone in the UK complains about the licence fee I say, just come to NZ to see how low tv can go when it chases the corporate dollar.

And American TV? Every time I visited the US (admittedly it was about a decade ago I was last there) the frequency of ad breaks seems much worse than here, particularly given the number of documentary-type shows edited to work around these breaks - you get 10 minutes of (say) true crime cop show, 15 seconds of "coming up next" teaser , two minutes of commercials, 15 seconds recapping what happened before the ad break... and repeat.

If you watching adverts in 2015, there is something seriously wrong with your setup.
