If a person says they have Sky for sport it MUST be great programming surely?

They had 50%, its less now. But its taken years, while the banter is bagging Sky (which is all you ever do here, sorry) its been years and years to drag down to the current subscribers level. Yet you say they dropped 232,000 in one year??? So in 2.7 years they will have no subscribers? Yes, Im playing with numbers but so are you

In the last year, according to the 2019 presentation, Sky had 92k satellite disconnections and 50k activations. Residential satellite revenue declined by $64m (from $694m to $630m - still more than 2x TVNZ's revenue). It was a 9.3% revenue decline (significantly less than the rate of decline in Sparks voice business BTW).

In the last 5 years it had 552k disconnections and 372k activations. Thats net 180k subscribers over 5 years. Last year wasnt that different to the average loss of subscribers - which was 6.3% of its base. Is that hemorrhaging? Cos its still a lesser percentage than Spark has been hemorrhaging voice customers? Or have you been commenting on Sparks issues elsewhere that I've missed?

Why do people seem to forget that Sky already streams all sports via SSN and Rugbypass, I have no doubt its the future. Its just not now.

From what I've read in forums they don't do catch up for most sports just highlights. I'd think lot of people home from work or something would rather watch a game/sport in own time, so Sky is dropping the ball in streaming.

Not just Sports they're dropping the ball in other streaming entertainment areas as well, guessing they are worried about canalizing their satellite base which means they won't be up with the play on streaming.

Not sure where your getting your info, you can watch full replays of any sports they have on. Highlights as well, they have 12 Channels of sport.... Unless your meaning catch up in some other way?

From this page, plenty people brought it up, was confirmed replays on demand sparse.

I'm not talking about scheduled replays on the channels, but someone being able to watch what's been on when ever they like, i.e on demand.

Are these people wrong in their comments?

Ahh I see, I was meaning scheduled. I have VFTV and you can go back and watch anything on demand via the app on my phone. Wonder why Sky hasn’t got the same.

The real question for 2026 is whether NZR goes DTC or via a broadcaster. If streaming is suitably accepted (and has the broad population coverage that the NZR wants) as a delivery method then why would NZR bother selling the streaming rights to someone like Spark (or Amazon or Facebook) or Sky when it could go direct? Why pay a middle man?

NZR's deal places it in a stronger position to obtain production assets and production knowledge. Everyone is talking Sky/Spark but the smartest guy in the room is still Brent Impey at NZR. One of the sharpest minds in NZ media that you will ever have the privilege to meet.

Some cringe adulation there but nothing mind blowing going on here, NZRU and Sky have long been an informal cartel. They've just been forced to formalise it because of Sky's weak financial position. Wintel had a good run too, until the competitive landscape was massively disrupted. Could RWC Japan be the iOS/Android moment for RUSky?

A time-poor geek is hardly a geek at all
