I'm actually quite pleased with the sports ppv option. $15 per game for a Warriors game is not cheap but then its $60 pm vs. the $90 I'm paying now for Mysky with all the crap I don't need. Plus I don't need to watch all Warriors games live. I can still choose to watch some delayed on Prime. In the NRL off season (5 months after Sept) I won't pay for a thing.

All my other TV content comes from Apple TV US, Netflix, Hulu etc. which is much better.

That was my thought as well. I was interested in getting one of these boxes just for the casual sports program but $15 is way too much considering it will be in SD..

We don't have sky, and presumably we are in the target market as I miss not being able to watch the football, cricket and rugby.

However I will be making the decision to get 2 DVDs or iTunes movies rather than get a $14-15 sports game (entertains the family for twice the amount of time).

I thought it was an HD box? Or perhaps that is just freeview content. If it isn't in HD, then there is no point really. These days everything should be in HD if it was filmed in HD. It is a bit like broadcasting in B&W, when colour came in.

Its 12 channels stuffed onto a singe DVB-T2 mux, total bitrate = 38 Mbps. Do the math. No point in HD really anyway as none of the channels broadcast have any HD presence on Sky's satellite platform. Most of the channels are actually very low bitrate vulgarities on the satellite platform.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

On the IGLOO Facebook page they are saying that it looks 'really good' and 'like HD'.

So does this mean that Frontrow will have a lot of bandwith and everything else will have barley anything?

You can't really compare a live sports event with a movie or bluray can you?
You can say you'd rather spend the money on something else for sure but you can't compare them really.

Personally I am not interested in movies, TV maybe, but basically if it's a movie I want a low compression HD picture and uncompressed HD audio. That's just me, but I'm happy to go to my local movie store to pick up a disc for $4 max. Streaming is the future for sure, but I'm not getting a Bluray equivalent via that method.

Where I have a void is live sports, and for me that's all I'm interested in SKY for, but as mentioned earlier, at $75 minimum per month/$900 per year that's just not working for me currently. A small one off payment and $10 - $15 per event would be ideal. To only get it in SD is a big downer, given the source is HD. And that's the beef really, in that NZ needs real competition in this area, and not some quasi competition where it's all the same company who doesn't want to encroach on it's real money earner product.

Question: do the sport provider companies sell the rights for an event/season to only one single network, forcing a monopoly for whoever buys the rights? Or do they sell the rights to multiple networks within a country, allowing competition?

If I'm paying $15 / sport game I would expect fro that the same HD content that regular MySky people are getting but from the Email I posted earlier in the post it appears that only the FTA channels will be in HD.. Maybe it's being delivered over the Internet ..

Entirely up to them, but naturally exclusive rights will be worth considerably more than non-exclusive rights.

Would they make more money selling non-exclusive rights to Sky and another party (e.g. TVNZ) than they make selling exclusive rights to Sky? Very doubtful (or they would already be doing it)

This is why the government will be very reluctant to regulate sports content, since antisyphoning or enforced wholesale would naturaly hugely reduce the value of the sports rights to Sky and other parties, thus reducing the revenue for the NZRFU and other sporting bodies, which will put many NZ sporting bodies under extreme financial pressure.

Bad Luck. Guess what? - this is the real world.

If you want to watch the best sport in the world - you have to pay for it!!! Period.

Nice strawman argument, but I don't believe anyone was demanding free sports broadcasting. We were discussing the pricing.

Those complaining about the lack of HD on non free view channels remember that Sky charge a premium an extra $10 a month for their channels to broadcast in HD on Mysky. I currently have Mysky HDI and only get 1,2 and 3 in HD. If I want the Sky channels in HD I have to pay extra (which is just a crock). So for $15 per game in SD I think thats okay.

I'm probably one of the minority that will cancel my Sky Subscription and move to PPV and hand back my MySky HDI.
