DizzyD: Hence the Tivo is such a popular device in the US.
If you watching adverts in 2015, there is something seriously wrong with your setup.

That assumes there's something "seriously wrong" with people who watch live TV. Sure, I record things to watch later, e.g. a film that's on in the middle of the night or a sports event that's live when I'm at work, but The Walking Dead is on at 9:30pm on a Monday night on TV2 which is great. By then I'm home, changed, I've watched a bit of news, cooked, eaten, cleaned up, done some evening chores and I'm looking forward to sitting down to relax for a bit. I don't need to stream it directly from the US because I'm not ready watch it earlier, and if I record it to watch later it's going to compete with other shows that are on, or recorded, or I'm watching on Lightbox on the nights there isn't anything else I'm interested in, etc. so I end up days behind. Why not just watch it 9:30pm on Monday night?

Most of the shows you linked to there are Maori language lessons - maybe if you did watch a few you'd start to understand them?

Besides, why not watch it at 9:45pm while its still recording? Thats what we did last night. You will then be able to jump most of the ridiculous adverts anyway. Shop around for a better recorder, something with multiple tuners will give you better flexibility at recording multiple shows at once. I don't mind watching a few days behind either and don't really get all the hype of "same day as US".

Yes, maybe I am. Is that not what we do for all TV? Especially TV that gets my funding? I would not criticize Chinese TV on freeview, I don't expect to get any benefit from it and I am not funding it.

Thats the live TV guide. Does not matter what time I look at it, there is never anything entertaining on. As for learning a new language to receive a benefit to something I am funding, well that's a first ;-)

Here is an idea.

Instead of us taxpayers funding the Maori channel (+/- $40Million a year). How about rather funding a Freeview Sports TV channel.

There are two Maori channels how many non Maori channels are there? I believe the funding is fair and affordable about $0.17c per week per person. It is good value way to show case NZ culture.

IMO the money would be far better spent at subsidizing a freeview sports channel (Sky sports equivalent). It amazes me how much money is being spent here, and how little people know about the spending etc.

Whats the point of "show casing NZ culture" on a channel that only caters for 4.2% of the population? $40Million can far better spent, especially if its only about "show casing NZ".

We need to raise the funding and encourage all New Zealanders to use one of our official languages. Could lift the number of indigenous channels on Freeview. PBS is an appropriate vehicle for this.

Remember, Freeview is FTA. Its free, its not a subscription service that can afford to be a business. Its the same free servuce that wer have had since the 60's, with more free channels, and HD, and EPG, and with recorders. All that and its free to use, you can't expect it to be Sky, DirectTV, etc

Freeview is not 'free'. It is paid for by stuffing as many moronically offensive ads as possible down the gullets of hapless viewers. I have seen TV in many countries and I have never seen TV anywhere else that expects people to sit through so much commercial crap. No-one who is not brain dead watches this any more. I have a friend who used to complain that he could never get through a film on Freeview because the constant 'breaks' (now there is a misnomer if there ever was one) would put him to sleep. He was technically unsophisticated so I found a second-hand DVR for him and set it up so he could skip past the interruptions. It improved his quality of life enormously. Freeview is dead. I don't care how many pluses it has. It committed suicide. The sooner everyone is streaming, the better.

Okay, I suppose I should qualify this a little. I came from Europe at a transitional time for media. Commercial stations were just beginning to be allowed to compete with the public service broadcasters in places. But commercials were tightly-controlled and aired in blocks, nothing like the constant screaming interruptions you get here. Since I started streaming I have been able to revisit some of the European broadcasters and commercials still have not taken over like they have here. It is far, far better.

I haven't been in America for many years, though on the basis of past performance I would not hold it up as a shining example of commercial restraint. I did live there for many years in the 1950s and 60s but in my memory even that was not as bad as it is here.

I did overlook Australian TV. Can't imagine how. They actually are worse.

As for the brain dead comment, people usually do have a choice if they are prepared to take the trouble. But my real point was that anyone who isn't already brain dead, soon will be if they watch much broadcast televison in this country.

Maori TV never was in HD for RWC, however their coverage was great! and non-ad intrusive especially after the hakas

I can never understand comments like this. A typical program allows for about 15 minutes per hour of ads - you can easily see this when streaming as episodes are typically 22 or 45 minutes long. I've often heard the complaint that NZ has too many ads but I have always wondered if this is simply a perception issue, or perhaps the fact that the ads are more frequent with less, or less frequent but longer, but the idea that we have significantly more ads than other countries seems lost on me.

This being said I haven't had sky for years. $60+ with ads vs. $10-20 for streaming without is a no brainer to me. I'm not much of a sports fan which is a big factor of course.

It is not just a perception issue. Watch some overseas commercial TV. Ads here are longer, louder, more frequent and more obnoxious.

Maori TV is actually one of the less awful options here. Sometimes quality films and documentaries and, of course, less advertising.
