Hmmm... I will check. I did a firmware update on the Live Hub last week, and think that the Netflix option is still there. However, I'm not currently using Netflix, so I could be wrong.

No they don't. Netflix is playable on Chrome browser using EME (Encrypted Media Extensions). No Silverlight required, which is therefore easier therefore to get running on linux. Firefox should be getting EME this year too.

I have asked Lightbox if they'll look into using EME as well as/instead of Silver light.

Two questions for Light box:

1) When (if ever) do you plan to start streaming movies?

2) Is the fact you have Sony and Samsung apps due to them helping you/priority (=fair enough), or because of exclusivity deals?

[Edit: I understand if the above can't be answered due to commercial sensitivity, but still, an indication if possible ;) ]

That must be relatively new, because it was only a few months ago that I needed to update Silverlight for Netflix on Chrome...

Yes, we'll look into it (we are), but I've got nothing to announce now.

Silverlight will be deprecated from several major browsers within the next year and the alternatives are maturing (and garnering support from a wider set of browsers), so there will be a natural flow towards other options.

Our pick of devices is a combination of commercial terms, partnerships, ease of development and market penetration. We're not done building out and we're committed to adding all the relevant platforms we can.

They are going to have to move off silverlight anyway, because I heard even microsoft no longer support silverlight anymore.

I didn't really want to do this either because I knew I'd forget. So I setup a virtual debit card on my Air NZ OneSmart account. Dead handy. Signed up, used that card, cancelled it after subscription confirmed. Easy. And if I really like it after 12 months I'll probably have no doubt about signing up.

Loving all this free stuff from spark. I got dead pissy at them when the iPhone 6 came out with all the confusion and lies (still kinda annoyed but I got it so whatever), but free Spotify, free Lightbox, cheap as chips movie tickets, I got $100 account credit for tagging them on Instagram, them interest free payments on my iPhone, it's easy to move on :P. Love love love <3

I have an expiring credit card that i'll use, if I like the service and want to continue I'll simply change it when the new one arrives.

I have a Sammy BR player with Smart Hub. Absolutely terrible.

We put up with it because things like TVNZ OD are better quality than via a browser, but it's really quite unreliable. later models may be better, but on our the OS and compulsory apps occupy 80% of the available memory.

We buy our broadband from Telecom, so I might give the free Lightbox deal a try.

I was going to sign up for the original trial, but they wanted a credit card number. Always makes me suspicious

For those with non compliant hardware, an easy and cheap fix is a Sammy DVD or BR player, circa 100 bucks.

We use it over a fair to poor 5Ghz WiFi signal. Usually works seamlessly, but get the occasional pause to rebuffer content. This doesn't happen every time we watch shows though, and often we get excellent looking picture with no pauses in playback.

When I signed up for the free 30 day trial some time ago, I cancelled it a day later, and it said it would keep the subscription active until the end of the 30 days. Not sure if that will work though for this promo?

If you cancel the service, it will end by the next renewal - even if that's at zero dollars, so you can't sign up and immediately cancel to get the 12 months free.

We do send out a payment reminder before taking the first charge of your credit card.

Not sure I understand the massive apprehension around this, but if that's how you feel, then that's how you feel.

Mainly because getting credit card details for these subscription type services is a trick some other companies use, as they know people will forget that they signed up, and they make it difficult to cancel. eg you must phone them, and then get put onto their retention's people etc. But my experience with Lightbox is that they don't do this, they email a reminder before it renews, and you can cancel it all online easily.
