Maori TV does a very good job and excellent content including HD coverage of the 2011 RWC

I love it when people say "excellent content". I have yet to see anything worth watching on Maori TV. Let alone anything I can understand.

Agreed.   If Media works and Prime got the same Gov funding as Maori TV gets they could  do way better.  Also Maori TV   now carries normal  paid  advertizing as well as getting it's Gov  subsidy....

Huge difference in content though. Maori TV should be better.

Maori TV reporters also involved in illegal activity in Gaza. Seems my tax-money is funding more than just the revitalisation of the Maori language and culture. What a shambles.

Yes, yes, Sky TV may have ads, and big logo's on screen.

But how about this for a Hypothetical question...

Say everyone ditched Sky TV (may or may not happen), what would be the knock on effect of the streaming services??

This is probably more relevant to sports rather than say Discovery TV, but the I'd assume the same would apply.

I'm guessing here, but I'd be willing to bet that in this Professional era of Sport, a great deal of the NZ Rugby Unions\NZ Crickets income would come from selling the TV rights to Sky TV. Sky can afford this through there customer base that they have, and any income that the streaming providers give to the NZRU or NZC is bit of a cherry on top for them.

However, if everyone ditches Sky, Sky probably wouldn't be able to afford the rights to the Rugby\Cricket, the NZRU and NZC aren't going to take a reduction in income (dividends to pay, players to pay), therefore the streaming would more than likely increase in cost, the streaming providers would use advertising, so as to keep the cost to the consumer as low as possible, and you're back where you started again.

At the end of the day, for sports fans at least, the likes of Sky are almost a necessary evil. Sport has fans yes, but ultimately sport is now a BIG business.

I think you're right but I don't see it as being such an issue for Rugby/Cricket, people are willing to pay for those sports. It's going to be more of an issue for the minor sports that Sky shows now and pays some money to but which the NZ public (aside from the die hards) wouldn't normally pay for individually. I suspect their revenue from the sale of their TV rights will fall.

Odds are in a case like that, the Sky Sport section would spin off into its own wee company. It would keep its cameras at all the live games it could get rights to, then onsell the coverage to whoever would pay for it - TV, streamers, the sporting bodies themselves for resale.
The larger sports, like rugby, might well form their own OB units allowing them to package their own product and sell directly to fans, or resell to streamers or TV.
There would certainly be fragmentation, and you'd end up having to purchase several different services if you wanted a range of sports.

When the sports broadcasting is fragmented, the fixed costs in running that business are duplicated over and over. Subscribers will pay for those extra costs. So the sports costs may be very high, also due to inefficiencies compared to a larger venture. The Sports TV cost is likely to be very high. Add in NF and LB. Higher.

+1

Maori TV is far from free. Us taxpayers are fitting the bill. Something like $40 million a year.

Always amazes me how much better TVNZ/TV3 and even Prime are so much better than Maori TV, even without the funding.

Freeview is free IMO. Its 2015, and if you still watching live TV and adverts then maybe its time you realized we no longer living in the 1990's.

Err, I think I must be watching a different Maori TV to you. The one I watch has many more documentaries and intelliggent films than the likes of TVNZ/TV3. Not to mention way less cooking, home renovation, cop chasing and border control reality shows. And best of all, no Mike Hosking. It's a halfway decent offering that stacks up way better than the heavily dumbed-down TVNZ and TV3. Have you actually watched it recently?

investigating and reporting or breaking the law / masquerading as a journalist?

Why are taxpayer funded Maori TV journalists on a flotilla?

Care to list some examples of those great documentaries and intelliggent films? I struggle to find anything interesting.

Actually watched the walking dead last night. Awesome show.

Out of curiosity, does Maori TV have an international news affairs programme?  If so, then this could be justified as much as TVNZ, TV3, Sky News etc. send reporters there.... If they do not have that sort of programme then what would the purpose be and would doing what they have done broken their charter etc.?

On taxpayer money? Care to elaborate then what Gaza has to do with the revitalization of the Maori language and culture?
