Does anyone have a voda handset + Windows that they're using for packet data calls?

I've been trying to get mine going for the last few days (failing miserably) and suspect it's to do with how windows expects voda's APN to authenticate itself. Looking at the Windows XP PPP traces, windows is trying to authenticate the other end, failing (I think failing - it's not clear), but then the voda APN is sending an IPCP back but windows doesn't expect it. So one of the two end's PPP state machine is doing funny things.

I'm using a serial modem over IDA and added the init string to the modem of +CGDINIT=1,"IP","web.vodafone.net.nz", tried PAP and CHAP auth but with no success. Also the same deal with or without a PPP username/password. Also tried the nokia PC suite and got much the same outcome.

Does anyone have any screenshots or config bits they can flick me with the settings they use for their XP DUN connection?

The phone is a Nokia 6234 and the help I get from the Nokia helpdesk and the voda helpdesk is "talk to the other guy" :(

You won't connect with this Init String. Try +CGDCONT=1,,"www.vodafone.net.nz" instead.

Changing the init string didn't fix it, but what did was:

- booting to safe mode
- removing Ethernet adapter
- removing wifi adapter
- rebooting and let adapters be automatically redetected.

Then choosing a completly different modem to the ones i removed (the serial modem over IRDA) and connecting - worked first time.

Lovin' my Windows experience.

Thanks for the suggestions though, guys.

I had difficulty trying to use WModem from my Jasjam over USB. Windows XP detected it as Generic Serial, and couldn't find the driver for it. Search the web and found an old "USBMDM.INF" from HowardsForum by googling for "WModem Generic Serial". Anyhow, got that INF and point the installer to it and done.

Anyhow question here, to connect on HSDPA/UMTS via WModem over USB. Do I need to add any initialisation string? The APN is set to "www.vodafone.net.nz" on WModem applet on PPCPE by default.

Update: I did another search today, and couldn't find the anything on "WModem Generic Serial" from HowardsForum, so I did a blog about the process to install WM5 as USB Wireless Modem.
