My old mobile phone has recently died, and I am looking to buy a smartphone to replace it.

This will be my first smartphone and I have limited knowledge of what is available. I have owned an iPad for some time and, given that I am reasonably happy with iOS on the iPad, my default phone choice would be an iPhone. My budget limits me to the iPhone 4 8GB, which is currently available from several stores for around $595.

Is this a good buy, or would you recommend something different? I expect to use the phone primarily for web access - voice calls, texts and the camera will be used significantly less often.

Galaxy S3 in that price range. User JohnR has one pretty close to your budget with 4G Capabilities

if primarily for web access you want a bigger screen than the iphone (unless your eyes are superman vision and your fingers and tiny)

so go buy johnr's galaxy s3

Windows Phone. User interface is intuitive and very easy to use. Buy something like Nokia Lumia 920 or Lumia 720.

If you're used to using IOS, this will be like a smaller ipad with more capabilities. You'll know where everything is so quickly, you'll love it. Once you go iPhone, you never go back :P

Nothing wrong with the phones that have been suggested but since you're already on iOS you'll feel right at home.

The 4 and 4S are still great phones. If you are already happy with the Apple ecosystem via the iPad then the iPhone is an obvious choice IMO. No learning curve, you will just know how to use it.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I agree no point in confusing things with a different OS and it works together.
