I have just connected my cell phone to my laptop via a USB cable that I had ordered for my phone, Samsung SCH-a870. I downloaded the USB drivers and setup a dial up connection with my ISP.

It works, but dials out everytime with a 14.4 connection. I have tried different phone #'s and different ISP's the results are the same. Do I have to contact Verizon? or is it my phone? I have even tried it in a defferent area with a full bars.

Welcome to Geekzone... What you are seeing is normal for this kind of connection. If you use the phone to dial a standard ISP line you are using a circuit switched connection (CSD). CSD is exactly like a voice call and uses your minutes. It is also limited in the speeds it can achieve with a max of 14.4Kbps.

If you instead use the newer technologies such as CDMA EVDO (on Verizon and Sprint), then you are in for average speeds of up to 600 Kbps. CDMA EVDO (and UMTS) are called 3G technologies because they are the third generation of cellular data and voice - while CSD is the first generation.

When using CDMA EVDO your mobile operator is effectively the ISP. In general the number to call is #777, and the password will vary from operator to operator, but in your case it should be username phonenumber@vzw3g.com, password vzw.

Note that you must have a data plan in your account otherwise it will get very expensive.
