Hi guys. I'm a bit of a noob at this, so I'm asking if you guys can post the names of your phones. I'm after a phone that I can plug in USB and use it as a modem (on vodafone). There's got to be plenty, but I don't know where to begin.

Can you guys just post some cellphone model names so I have something to google up? Im sure theres a few of you in here who would know. Cheers.

Motorola V6 MAXX

have tried the above it is true HSDPA phone so you can get the latest 3g services, your calls will still come in even though you're online.

Wow thats a really neat phone. Anyone know of a cheaper model? It doesn't have to be 3G. The GPRS stuff is fine by me aye. Something cheap that I can throw together in my laptop bag & use as a modem while I'm away on my business trips.

(By business trips, I mean flying to other cities to go to metal gigs and raves)

For what you're getting the V6 maxx is well overpriced. For near that price-point at a Parallel Importer you can pick up a Nokia N95 or N82, compare them to the V6 Maxx at GSMarena....

For cheaper phones than the V6 Maxx any of these phones do much more than the V6 Maxx:

Nokia E51, E65, N81, N80 or N73 all weigh in between $500 and $600-odd.

I can't really speak for other manufacturers phones, as I really only know Nokia particularly well, but those are all nice phones with excellent feature-sets. The fact that they have WLAN connectivity is the main thing that really sets them apart from the V6 Maxx, and makes them perfect for travel. Phoning home and staying in touch with MSN for example are all possible over WLAN for free, or at least far less than what Vodafone will charge you.

Some motorolas (V3x and e770v and possibly that MAXXX thing) have a very small and reliable USB driver for modem access. if you can pick one up for next to nix though and could be ideal and uses the standard MiniUSB connector.

Using my Nokia N95 was a breeze, stable and extremely quick asides the actual USB drivers being utterly bloated.

I used to use an e50, it was a GPRS only device (slow data) but a very small and reliable smartphone.
