Hi,

currently putting together a package for remote working in central Wanganui and wondered if anyone has real world experience with either the Vodem or one of the 3g data cards in terms of upload connection speed? I've looked at the online map of Vodafone’s 3g coverage and it has some orange there, indicating some 3g cell(s), but what speed has anyone experienced?

My fandamily are up there, and occasionally when visiting them I have to do work there. Last year I had no end of problems with the 3G card from Vodafone, the Merlin U630. Turned out to be a card issue so Vodafone replaced it. I do get 3G connections up there but can't quite remember what speeds.

I'm heading up this saturday so I could test it out for you if you like - I have a Vodem, HSDPA PCExpress Card, and Merlin U630 so can test out speeds on all 3 if you don't mind waiting a few days for an answer?

Bear in mind also the new UMTS 900MHz network which has new devices due to be launched any day and has far greater coverage than the current 3G outside of the cities.

No problem in waiting a few days - some real world speeds would be great. Also seeing which device gets the best speed will be interesting.

Centeral Wanganui has good 3G coverage including HSDPA up to 1.8mbps DL and 384k UL

All 3G sites in NZ are HSDPA

The U630 is WCDMA only 384k DL and 128k UL in 3G coverage!

Also with Vodem make sure you are running latest lite SW 3.3 and firmware www.mobilenetworks.co.nz

The new lite SW can lock the Vodem to 3G only!

Hey thanks johnr that's good info, i'll check out my firmware version tonight.

Central Wangas is what I was told by Vodafone at the time too. My parents live about 5 mins drive from central wangas - mind you, everywhere in that town is 5 mins drive from the cbd :) I'll post back on Saturday or Sunday night.

Stupid me I left my laptop bag in the hall at home before loading it into the car :)
only realised when I got to Otaki. I'm up there again in 2 weeks, if anyone still cares I'll post then.
