Whenever I turn my phone on or off it makes these annoying ringtone sounds (well they sound like ringtones) and then turns on or off. does anyone know how stop this from happening?

i hate that too..

i always put the gtran in silent mode first, by holding down the asterix key
then i can turn it off without hearing that stupid chime.

unfortunately, it forgets that it's in silent mode and plays that annoying tune when you turn it on again.

Is there a setting in the phone to turn them off? there is on most phones, either as warning tones or on/off tones specifically

Unfortunately there is no way to set it permanently to silent, or to turn off/change the startup/shutdown sounds. As mentioned earlier in the thread by taniwha you can set it to silent and shut down without the tune, but when you turn back on it's reset to normal mode.

As ironic as it is most people seem to have adopted putting their thumb over the speaker when turning it on.
