Hi all :)

My old Okta Mondo mobile has got a cracked external screen. I had it in my back pocket and sat on the phone causing the damage (time to lose some weight i reckon!!)

Any idea of whether is worth paying to get fixed or even if this is poss?? I have already replaced it with another mobile but would like to fix the Okta and either sell or give away if I can find a way to get fixed on the cheap. Ideas??

check your house and contents policy to see if you can claim the repair under insurance. many policies cover damage to mobile phones up to $1000-$2000.

Thanks I didn't even think to check. i'll have to dig out the policy and have a look!! I would have thought that there would prob be an excess and not worth it?

there will be an excess - typically $100. Not sure what your phone is worth, but if its an expensive one then it will probably cost a few hundred to fix. Sometimes insurance company finds it even cheaper to replace than to fix.

If you are a hands-on sort of person you might get lucky with a cheap phone off TradeMe or similar that is broken elsewhere that you can salvage the part you require off?

A word of warning on the "buy spares off trademe" , these phones are nearly impossible to get apart without destroying them, I'd just leave it the way it is and give it away

Agreed,

You will need a mini-torx screw driver, something to separate the case clips and then the screen ribbons are nasty little things to get seated right, especially in a flip phone. The dust the you invariably get inside the case will also drive you nuts.

Definitely can be done though.

I'd just ring up the service agent, get a rough quote over the phone and then decide.

If you take the phone into any Telecom store, they'll be able to tell you straight away what it would cost to repair it.

Not to mention the displays are melted to the front panel and also stuck in with double sided stickystuff.

You can get at the sub LCD without removing the main LCD but you need to get at them a bit more. I only bothered restoring mine from some spare parts as it was the only basic phone that could be used at a tethered EVDO modem (since replaced with an i325 with the same result plus GSM/GPRS capability)
