HELP I HAVE A HYUNDAI TX115C AND ON THE BACK IT HAS A SMALL STICKER SAYING "QUALCOMM 3G CDMA"
IT IS CONFUSING???

PLEASE REPLY TO THIS FORUM PLEEEEAAASSSSEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The TX115 is most definitely not 3G.

I've often wondering about this sticker because I have seen it on a lot of older handsets like the Kyocera 2135 which is a clunky old thing that doesn't even have a colour display. I assume that Qualcomm's patent on CDMA technology requires other manufacturers to label their handsets like this, but it's a bit of a worry if Qualcomm doesn't know what 3G is!

Alasta - you are wrong.

In 1999 the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) approved 5 terrestrial radio interfaces under the IMT2000 standard as being 3G. This is the only universally accepted definition of what 3G represents.

IMT2000 3G:
CDMA - 1xRTT, 1xEV
WCDMA - UMTS
CDMA TDD - TD-SCDMA
TDMA - UWC136, EDGE
FDMA - DECT

Qualcomm are quite correct in branding CDMA2000 phones as 3G.

Thanks for clearing that up. It's interesting that the ITU's interpretation of the term '3G' is inconsistent with the generally accepted interpretation. After all, Telecom are purporting to have just 'launched' their 3G network but, according to ITU standards, they've had 3G for ages!

3G is about services as well as network. A consumer perception of 3G is streaming video. Telecom have only just launched their first streaming video phone the Sanyo 7400 which runs on CDMA 1xRTT and is branded as T3G.

For some time 3G was also limited by bandwidth - for lack of better segmentation. Basically any speed capable of delivering streaming content with a minimum speed set for moving clients and static clients.

These days the speeds are going above these levels and the ITU segmentation makes more sense. Even the use of services definition is a better parameter, as posted by Jama.
