Hi guys

I just bought a Nokia E71 a week ago.

Must say not happy with the phone already.
Besides the keyboard being too small i am having some issues with the phone.

How long should it take for the GPS to start working ? sometimes it takes 5 minuites sometimes it just wont load, all the time it will say it has atleast 8 satelites that are accessable. When I say GPS I mean just GPS co ordinates not nokia maps.

The other thing is the memory card i got with the phone doesnt seem to work, i tried using a mates card and it reads it fine. :(

Other questions

Any programs for using maps that can run off the phone ?
Any programs that can work as voicemail ? I tried using Best answer Phone or something like that but it complains about the version of the software i downloaded when trying to install.
Also would anyone know how i can get the voice recorder going fast when in a conversation.

Any help much appreciated.

Browse to www.google.com/gmm on your phone and install Google Maps for mobile. Go outside away from trees and buildings and then start the program and see how long it takes to get a lock. For some reason I find GMM is the quickest to get a lock, I will often start it just to get a lock then open the app I actually want to use.

Is the phone able to format the card? If so try that, otherwise take it back to where you brought it from, there isn't anything else you can do.

There is a tool available from Nokia which lets you use your computer to load the Nokia Maps info for your region onto your memory card using your computer.

Report back your results for further fault finding.

Hi there
thanks for the quick response.

I have installed google maps but i am actually wanting to just use the gps co ordinates and movement functions of the phone (have a car with no speedo) :) also wanting to use the phone for racechrono (lap timing).

I would like to load maps to the phone so i dont have to use internet all the time for access maps and also would be great if i could have navigation working but is nokia maps the only way that would work ?

Not sure how to format the card, should there be a menu option like that ?

GMM was just a way to test that your GPS, AGPS etc is functioning properly. Did you get a lock quickly with it outside?

MGMaps (www.mgmaps.com) does have the ability to store map tiles locally but I am not sure which if any are available for NZ.

Tried it today when i had some time, unfortunately the weather wasnt that great, which is the reason i think it took about a minuite to give my location.
I have used it before and it took about 30 secs to locate me while i was indoors so it is definitely viewing satelites.
What I dont understand is if i make it look at a bluetooth gps device then it gets co ordinates in a matter of seconds, as opposed to the phone alone that takes atleast 2 minuites if i am lucky.

Bluetooth GPS most likely has a far better GPS receiver in it without the space / power constraints of a phone.

Nokia maps is pretty fast if you can put that on your phone. It uses a combination of GPS, GPS-A and some online content to accelerate GPS lockon.

I suspect the E51 would have the same if not worse GPS than E71. And no 900MHz UMTS in the E51. Form factor of the E51 on the other hand might suit you more . . .
