For my curiosities sake, lets say there is nothing else operating in this country on any spectrum, what would be the ideal frequency to setup a mobile network as?

From my understanding, the lower the frequency the better coverage? Are there any disadvantages to running at a lower vs higher frequency?

Lower frequency = greater coverage footprint
Higher frequency = greater capacity

So if you were at Eden Park with 20000 other people all trying to make phone calls, a 2100MHz site would be better, as it could take more calls at once. It would not suffer too much with it's lack of coverage footprint, as it is a small hi density area.

If you were talking much less users, spread over a large area, then a 900 or 850MHz would be better. You wouldn't need 4x cells to cover the same area. Also, as there are much less users, you may not need the extra capacity of a higher frequency cell.

Anyway, that's my take on it all.
