So I've heard you could "flash" your mobile and reinstal firmware to the original manufacturer, as well as add additional functions to it etc.

Also I have been referred to opera as os for my cell.

How do I go about this? What are the downsides? Why would one want to do it?

Thanks :)

This is possible with some models - we can't even start thinking of helping you becausew you didn't tell as at least the maker and model.

Opera is a web browser, not a phone OS. You can't change the phone OS (not easily).

SE offer a web based software update tool, I know of no (legal easy or official) methods to debrand though (and I steer very clear of SE products due to the usual mandatory customised right softkey)

I see.

Oh well, we'll get Opera going for my browser when I get home. :D

Dead easy, go here http://www1.davinciteam.com/phones.html?phones=SE and you can change the firmware to whatever you want. They have the W705i but no W705a although I would assume the firmware is the same (ask them first).

I have used this site to debrand K850i and C902 to get rid of the annoying Vodafone live button and in the case of the C902 to stop smilies being automatically sent as picture messages rather than SMS which is stupid and expensive.

"Assume" the firmware is the same means it is possible it won't work and you might end up with a brick.

As usual, unless you are doing something on a spare phone, if you don't know what you are doing, don't do it.

I won't do it, unless someone who knows what they're doing is with me. heh...

Besides, you have already answered my question re opera freitasm. That was exactly what I needed to bypass my issue with locked browser. So thanks for that. :)

Although, I still have issues retrieving emails over wifi and surfing net over wifi (another issue I have posted in Telecom forum)... I believe this is due to the phone being locked to the network and doesn't allow me to use wifi for data transfer.
