kiwisteve: I know what you mean by those panels  I have same problem with the pukehou one    side on to it and about a 30 deg down angle  plus pine tress   all adds up to not much signal
Ok Ngarara  not know for good coverage !!  lots trees and too low but  that will explain why I see a microwave link licence to there from Forest heights

Ngarara gives very good coverage to Waikanae Beach though. We have line of sight coverage to Forest Heights but you can't make a voice call even with 2 signal bars due to excessive bitrate errors. Luckily the Ngarara site is stronger and the phone will generally stay on it - if you walk around inside our house occasionally you'll get an active call handing over to the Forest Heights site and it will just break up until the phone switches back to Ngarara again.

Yes agree Ngarara has its local good spots  around Waikane Beach  but parts of Te Moana road may not be good on 3G due to excessive tree attenuation. Prob need Forest Heights as well !!   lol

sbiddle: I know this is slightly OT but it's quite ironic that Vodafone have rolled out a large number of new 3G sites in Wellington over the past 2 months and yet there are areas such as Makara, Houghton Bay and Breaker Bay (to name a few) that have no GSM coverage and have had Telecom coverage for years. Vodafone seemed to have put all their $$ into the 3G rollout.

I've been waiting years for them to get coverage on the Wairarapa coast and to the best of my knowledge this still hasn't happened, but I'm amazed that they have no coverage at Houghton Bay considering that this is very much an urbanised area. I agree entirely that decent 2G coverage should take priority over expanding 3G coverage, but it seems that Vodafone are expecting that 3G services will turn out to be quite a cash cow.
