Good point, I forgot about that, though it could still be useful in some circumstances like this I guess.
I you're using Skype there's also the message service on Skype.
Which, again, is only OUT, not IN.
Actually they are both in and out providing both parties are using either Whatsapp or Skype.
I know it doesn't help for getting messages from people you don't regularly message with but for those that you do it is one option that will work if you get them to put Whatsapp or Skype on their phone particularly Skype as it does both voice and instant messaging.
Skype is free, I think you pay a subscription to Whatsapp. There is no per message cost with either unless you go over your phones data cap then it's what ever data you use, of course WiFi usage doesn't count either unless you bust your broadband cap.
