hairy1: I am sure the Apple watch is going to be something to behold, however I am all Android here and I can't imagine that Apple will make it a priority for it to work with Android. GBristow you must have a very important client given that no-one has seen these in the wild....

Mmm all Android here. Ha ha ha.

Did you order a watch in the end.

Good to see you back on GZ Gumboot! Have you been hiding?

It is not all android you know. Apple has infested my household in some ways. I actually had to use the ipad for work yesterday but that is another story.

I preordered a pebble. Am not holding my breath. They are slowly filling the backorders but are miles behind.

It showed up Best Buy the other day but the order using youshop shipping combined with OneSmart US dollars was declined due to youshop being a freight forwarder....

The smartwatch market is about to break out methinks. Samsung are bringing one out. Apple are bringing one out.... Maybe I should just wait. Sigh......

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I got a kickstarter pebble from someone while I was in Wellington for Nethui for $120.
Still fiddling with the SDK to see what it can do, but so far i'm fairly impressed. I have my phone battery %/unread emails/sms/calls + my next 2 calendar entries on it and someone's written a google 2FA watchapp for it, along with things like dice rollers, calendar apps, etc.

It does seem to reduce the battery life of your phone though, but hopefully once Android 4.3 comes out with BT LE the Pebble guys will release support for that. (The SoC in the Pebble supports it, but still requires software support)

ubergeeknz: That cookoo actually looks kind of cool.  Like it does enough to stop you having to get your phone out every five seconds.  Although if it connects by BT to your phone it's probably going to kill the phone battery anyway.

I have a Cookoo and its pretty cool. Does what I need - notifications. I always have my phone on silent and used to miss calls, now my watch starts vibrating witch is pretty hard to miss. It also alerts for facebook, twitter and calendar. It uses a forward on your gmail account to also notify of new mail.

Couple of things that are missing are SMS and native mail app support but I believe this is due to IOS restrictions and may be fixed in IOS7. Whilst those notifications would be good, they are not a show stopper for me.

Battery life is definitely reduced even though its using low power BT. I doubt I would get a full day (12 hours) on one charge but I only use the watch when I'm at work so its not really an issue for me personally.

Are any smartwatches available for purchase in NZ? The only one I can find is the Sony Smartwatch and it looks like that isn't that great, can only find them listed on Trade Me and Mighty Ape.

Anything else out there? A walk in retail store where I can look at one?

Hi guys, now with the release of the Peeble Steel and the Galaxy Gear, what does everyone think? I have a Samsung Note 3 and the idea of a smart watch really appeals to me, just looking to gather some opinions from fellow geeks on whether its best to wait till second gen (obviously going to be better) or get in on it now.
By the way the Peeble Steel is by far my favorite at the moment.

Pretty much agree with this.

It's about $300 which considering the functionality is reasonable from my point of view.

I'd like to know what the expected waiting time on a Pebble Steel is. Also I wonder why Microsoft hasn't released official Pebble support, it's a pain for us Windows Phone users.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?
