As said a lot is subjective.

I would say either:

Nokia Lumia 720 if you Windows Phone is you thing, if you want Office or exceptionally good maps/nav apps.

Or

Sony Xperia SP if you prefer Android, want 0.3" more screen or want 4G.

Both a in your price range, both will do the job, both have good reviews and can be found for direct comparison on GSM Arena.

Personally, I have the Nokia and I love it. Took a little getting used to from Android, original Moto Defy, but now I have the hang of it I love it and wouldn't go back to Android.

Don't buy a three year old iPhone. It isn't even cool any more and it looks different so everybody will know.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Agreed, the Nexus 4 or Lumia 720, would be good options imo.

sxz:
Nichlemn: The next priority is a large screen. Lower down is its weight - I don't need to carry it all that far. The lowest priority is how good it is with "fancy" features that laptops or cameras are suited to doing. It doesn't really matter if it's no good at watching videos.

I think you can't go wrong with the Nexus 4.  Nice big screen, stock Android - so it has none of the fancy skins & rubbish the Samsung Galaxy's have & its just so fast!.  For it's price, I really can not recomend it more.  My opinion - it's better than the Galaxy 3 & all model iPhones.

Plus, its less than $500: http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=1484309

I have an iPhone 4 and it's old, dated, and the screen feels so small.  You do not want to spend $500 on a three year old phone, especially as the new iphone is coming out in 6 weeks or so - it will make the iPhone 4 instantly older and crustier.

This. I just got a Nexus 4 (free on 2 degrees $49/mo plan) and it rocks. Only a few phones out there are better and they cost a fair bit more. Kicks iphone a$$ :)

Only issue is that Vodafone don't stock it themselves. They are affiliated with some stores that take VF vouchers but they tend to be overpriced IMO.

Vodafone was going to give me a $350 voucher plus double my data allowance, etc but the free Nexus 4 on 2 degrees was still a better deal since I only had a Galaxy S1. I'm locked in for 2 years now but meh. Consider the move if it suits you, lots of competition around
