I moved from iPod as a PDA to an Android tablet and then an Android phone from a simple Nokia.
Android is more complicated, there's a learning curve. Back then iOS didn't do multitasking, I didn't like that about Android but I use it constantly now. There's a lot more you can configure, and things aren't generally quite as well integrated as iOS - but you get a lot more flexibility.
I borrowed an S3 and used it for a few weeks before I decided to give up my simple Nokia phone, if I hadn't gotten the loaner I'd have purchased a cheap phone to see if I liked them as a phone. I did.
Nexus 5 or Moto G would be good value choices. HTC One and S4 are premium phones worth considering.
