I'm always surprised when people say "I lost the receipt" because it has always been second nature for me to keep them, usually in a pile or folder somewhere, usually unordered unfortunately. However, if there is an extended warranty period advertised on the box, it's always a good idea to keep the box, that way you can indeed prove that it's 2 years or whatever.
