Thanks for that, very helpful I just compared the specs of the two side-by-side on Pricespy. Looks like a good contender (as soon as I can get my head around the Android operating system), but there are a few features missing/different and I wondered if these would make a difference:

Optical image stabilization (OIS) - this is missing on the Samsung, but it's on the Nokia. Does it make much difference when it comes to taking photos? I'm hardly the world's best photographer...

DC-HSPA- same as above, does it make any difference when using data?

DLNA certified - as above. What is this for exactly?

Finally, neither of them are listed as having an "Exchangeable battery" - does this mean the battery can't be taken out?

J5 Prime seems to take fine pictures, but like you I'm not the world's best (or most informed) photographer.  I just take photos, and I'm very happy with the results.

Yes, J5 battery is fixed, I guess you'd have to take it somewhere to get it replaced.  BTW, the battery life on the J5 seems much better than on the S4 (10.15 pm and I've still got 87%; used to be down to 30% or less on the S4).

I've got a Nokia/MS 640, which I keep on the fast ring just for fun, lovely phone but too many limitations for my everyday use, I fear.

The MS Office apps seem fine, but I don't use them much except for looking at Excel or ppt files.  I use Outlook as my mailer, and have good access to all my stuff on OneDrive.

The S7 looks a bit too big for me. I looked at a few handsets today and decided I would like something close in size to (or smaller than) my 930.

Right, I went and had a look at a Vodafone and 2degrees shop today. These were the phones I looked at:

Vodafone:

Galaxy J5 Prime
Galaxy A3
Galaxy J5 (dummy phone)

2degrees:
Galaxy A5
Galaxy J7 Prime

Of these, which is the best (for what I would like to do)? I've accepted I'll need to take a step back in camera (the 930 has a 20MP camera) but are any of these any good?

1eStar: Check how much RAM the phone has, also don't buy a phone with less than 16GB memory. You'll hate yourself if you do that. The j5 prime j7 prime or i believe the a5 are ok. Anything with too lower spec is just the recipe for frustration.
The j5 prime doesn't have 5ghz Wi-Fi which surprised me. Check whether that j7 prime or a5 does. The s7 is a great phone if you can stretch the budget. I've got one I purchased from expert infotech on the Shore. Great phone for a good price.

To be perfectly honest the "too big" argument is not really valid anymore. You'll find that phones have now gotten to the point they're able to slide nicely into a pocket without any issues and you'll get used to the size very quickly and won't be able to live without it. My father switched from the HTC M7 over to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and loves it.

If this is a phone you're wanting to last you for x number of years and you've got money to burn then I'd strongly consider going towards something a little beefier.

Some good contenders for you in this space would be:
ASUS Zenfone 3 - Link.
Oneplus 3T - Link.
Huawei P9 32gb - Link.

Honestly I'd recommend the Huawei P9 as it is a great phone, has a great camera and you're getting a flagship with very good specs and a full screen replacement warranty (Here). I've used cheaper mid-range phones and they're pretty good however no flagship. If you're wanting it for photography then going with a cheaper phone will produce ok photos but nothing outstanding. There is ways like the phones I've recommended above that feature excellent cameras, specs and the latest versions of Android for not too much more than what you're already planning to spend.

Plus, going with one of the above phones means you're able to pop any sim in it (Vodafone, 2degrees, Spark, Skinny etc) and it'll just work. I've used the A5 for work and it is pretty good however does have a ram limitation in a way which may not bother you but if you do end up running anything a little demanding on it you'll notice it very quickly. That, and also the fact it is running a Samsung ROM which are not at all light. You've also got to think of software upgrades which I am afraid the Samsung A series devices have proven to be quite lackluster with.

Go for the P9 - you won't regret it. Seriously fun device and an absolute steal at the moment for $699 at most retailers.

Interesting comments, I'll keep them in mind. I did see a Huawei or two but was mostly looking at the Samsungs...
