freitasm:

Ask for the phone back and refund? Test it and sell again if working.

No it would have lost value the OP would loose money doing this.

One possibility is that the buyer has himself a locked handset. You sell him a good handset and he complains. You ask for the phone back and promise to refund. A few things can happen:

- You refund but don't get the phone back

- You refund but get back a dud phone and buyer keeps the good phone

Not seeing this going well.

Another possibility; phone was dodgy at original source that had be flashed with cloned firmware including IMEI; i.e. creating duplicate IMEI's. This could have been picked up on NZ network, i.e. a few of these phones here with same IMEI; thus IMEI black listed.

Wait so the network can pick up on 2 phones with the same IMEI?

So that can trigger a auto blacklist of both phones?

I would have thought it would be up to the new owner to sort out. Clearly its worked for the last 3 months, so I would have thought your involvement is moot, unless he/she explicitly needs you for something.

unique IEMI used to be a sellingpoint on many chinese cheap phones. Otherwise there is no need for it to be unique for the phones to work on a network.

Not aware of it auto blacklisting in NZ, but long time since I have had phones without iemis to see what happened. I think I threw them out in a cleanup.

The IMEI in the phone software matches the number printed on the sim card holder - so I don't think the phone has a dodgy IMEI.

In regards to helping the buyer - I'm probably not REQUIRED to.. but if the shoe was on the other foot and I'd bought a phone that was blacklisted after 3 months I wouldn't be happy. I figure it's only costing me time so no harm in helping.

I'm just waiting for the eBay seller to confirm the IMEI of the device matches the one I bought from them - then I'll contact 2Degree's and let you know how I get on.

Wish me luck!

This. Then at least you have some idea of where to look for the issue (not that its really your issue as such).

I didn't have much luck with 2D. They wanted the phone number / account pin of the number being used with the handset. Which I don't have so couldn't get very far.

I did contact my provider (Skinny) though who amazingly got back to me instantly -

"I'm just checking the TCF website now and I can see that the IMEI number is on the blacklist for some reason. From our end, looking into both the blocking history on the phone and the numbers attached to the phone, all we can see is that the phone hasn't been blocked by us and has no history of being blocked, and that the only number used with the phone is MYPHONENUMBER"

Great customer service from Skinny but it's beginning to look more like the buyer has put the block on the phone himself and is trying to get me to take it back.

Do they blacklist handsets that have been used for illegal activities?

Got a reply from 2D via social media -

"That is rather odd.I can see that it is showing as blacklisted on the TCF website. However it definitely wasn't blacklisted by us, and I am unsure as to how it would have been blacklisted."

So I guess the only thing left to do is contact Voda and see if they know anything about it - bit of a head scratcher if not.
